Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 03/12/2026

By Danny Coleman

"I'm alright my friend, how are you; it's going back a bit but I'm still grumpy, nothing changes, I'm alright and above ground as they say," laughed the always engaging Rick Wakeman as he discussed his upcoming March 13 Colonial Theatre show in Phoenixville, PA, his March 25 show at the Bergen PAC in Englewood, NJ and his March 29 show in Red Bank, NJ at The Vogel

From his days as the keyboard wizard (Cape and all) for legendary progressive rock band YES to those of a "Grumpy Old Man" or "Grumpy Old Rock Star," whichever you prefer, Wakeman has brought audiences across the world his humor while showcasing his immense talent and with this run of shows he has decided to make it a family affair.

"Yeah, I'm going out with my son Oliver," he expressed with excitement."I was meant to go out on a short two person tour last year in September with a singer called Hayley Sanderson who I've done a lot of work with and unfortunately, health issues meant that I had to cancel the tour, which was the first time that I've ever had to do that. We wanted to reschedule but Hayley wasn't available. I still wanted to go out and I thought, What can I do that is different? I like doing things that are different and it just so happened that I was speaking to my oldest son Oliver; I mean we've done shows together. He was with the band when I did "King Arthur" at the O2 in London a few years ago and we thoroughly enjoyed that. He's been on stage with me and his brother Adam and one of their sisters Jemma and I thought; you know what? I've never done some shows with Oliver and it could be fun because he'll bring a different element because of course he spent two years with YES doing some stuff and I bet we can put together a bit of a fun show along with the great opportunity to insult each other on stage. So, I called him up and put it to him and he said, "Yeah, I'd love to do that, that's great" and it's called the Wakeman & Son Tour and yeah, it's gonna be a lot of fun."

Oliver is a keyboardist also and has worked with his father's former band as well as band mate Steve Howe. So, exactly how is this going to "Play" out with both he and his dad being keyboard virtuosos?

"Oliver is a good player," began Rick, "He spent two years with YES back in 2007, 2008 around that period. He toured with YES in America and all around the world; he's a good player and a lovely lad. He can be as wonderfully humorous and sarcastic as his younger brother so it should be interesting; I'll take a lot of schtick that's for sure. We've got two very small keyboard rigs and a grand piano and it'll be a mixture of either I on keyboards and him on piano or me on piano and him on keyboards. So, we'll be moving around quite a lot, which is great because that's my exercise for the day (Laughs). He'll be doing some stuff on his own, I'll be doing stuff on my own and there will be stuff that we do together; it's gonna be a real mixture of music and very different from any other two man show I've done before."

Wakeman is no stranger to good natured ribbing and can dish out the sarcasm as well as take it. Given the nature of their relationship, how long is the show? According to Wakeman, that's up for interpretation.

"Well, we don't really know but it's going to be around an hour each half give or take a few minutes," he laughed. "We're guessing it's gonna be around about that but I suppose a lot depends on how the insults fly and how long each of our solo bits goes on between the others. I'd say you are pretty safe, you should be able to get the last bus home."

When asked whether he preferred the smaller venues that this current string of shows invades or the brightr lights of arenas, he was very quick to respond.

"I don't care, being basically really honest with you, I don't care. I'm happy, I'll play anywhere and that suits me. I would like if there were more spread out venues. I love all of the venues I'm doing but it seems that whoever books shows for me; I don't think they feel the West Coast or the Midwest exist as far as I'm concerned. I would be doing more I suppose; I suppose it all depends, if promoters don't want you in there, then we don't go. I think we're doing 13 shows, I'd have been more happy doing 18 or 20 but for whatever reason, the West isn't particularly keen on having me, it's what it is. I'll play anywhere and I'm happy to play anywhere. I've played Phoenixville before and I've played Red Bank, they're great places to play. They are lovely intimate small venues and always have great audiences there and so they're a joy to play. I've done all of these venues before. I joke and say it's almost like a bit of a venue reunion tour which is lovely. All of the venues on this tour are lovely and New Jersey is such a musical state, it's incredible."

Doesn't seem that much slows him down which is evident by a recent medical episode which slowed him a bit but not any longer as he is on this tour and is busy through the end of the year with more gigs and a new book.

"I'm going to Bosnia for a week in April. I'm a patron of some dog rescue centers and one is in Bosnia. So, I'm going out to see that and check on some rescue dogs and the ones we're bringing back to re-home. I've got to go home and be checked up because I had some major surgery back in November. Everything went really well but I need to go home and be sort of signed off on a final check to make sure that everything is where it should be (Laughs). Then I've got some Christmas shows coming up with myself and my son Adam and a great singer named Mollie Marriott who is Stevie Marriott's daughter. We'll do some Christmas shows and in October I have a book coming out with Random House which should make for interesting reading. I might read it myself to find out what I've done."
