Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 03/05/2026

"I'm good, we've got like a six thousand inches of snow here in Syracuse; it's a fun time but I'm super excited to get to play in Jersey and New Hope, Pennsylvania," laughed the fantastically talented Sydney Irving as she and her band The Creatures launch their "Mini tour" tonight in New York City at The Cutting Room followed by two shows tomorrow, March 6; the first a matinee at The Starving Artist Cafe` in Stockton, NJ and an evening show at Cary's Music Room inside the New Hope Inn & Suites in New Hope, PA.

Signed to Deko Entertainment and managed by Pilato Entertainment, Irving has had her career path mind made up from a very young age. Whether it was learning lyrics taught by her father or listening to her mother's music variety, Sydney knew she wanted to write and perform music.

"I started playing music when I was about 10 years old," she explained. "I got my first guitar and started lessons and I really fell in love with the songwriting of Taylor Swift; I loved the "Speak Now" album. Then I discovered Tom Petty and I just absolutely fell in love with songwriting and that's all I wanted to do. I released my first album when I was 14, I had started writing songs a few years earlier, my parents were always very supportive and they thought the best way to learn was to just jump in fully and book a day in the studio and record a few songs and so that was my first record and it was called "Hello Stranger." It was eight songs recorded live. I went into the studio, we booked one day and I went in and I played each song like 30 times and we picked the best take. You can't find the album anywhere, we made 300 copies and it was a great experience, I learned a lot and I've been playing ever since full time and I'm super excited to have signed with Deko Entertainment and my awesome management Pilato Entertainment last year. The new record is called, "Unfashioned Creatures," it's kind of like Americana with a pop rock sensibility. My band and I are so stoked to get to come and perform the songs; it's our first mini tour. I've been playing around the New York area and a little bit in Pennsylvania but this is our first time really getting out on the road. We're gonna be in New York City the night before and then we're coming to hang out with you guys."

"I also really love Joni Mitchell," she went on, "I love Tom Petty, Tom Petty is my music hero. There is an artist named Barns Courtney, another named Joe P, I love Triumph; I grew up listening to a little bit of everything. My mom would play The Ramones and Jack Johnston and my dad had taught me all the words to "Paradise City" by Guns N' Roses when I was three. So, I love rock 'n' roll, I love more folky stuff, Americana, a little bit of everything."

Most musicians dread the business side of things and the prospect of seeking management and distribution contracts can cause some to become paralyzed with fear of making a choice. So, most kick the can down the road but not Sydney; oh she tried but thanks to a friend, things came together.

"It's kind of a funny story how this all came about," she chuckled. "So, three or four years ago, my long time guitar teacher and friend Warren was selling records at a thing called Bouckville Antique Week and there are just tables set up all down the street and people sell records and anything else you can ever think of and this gentleman walked up to his table and asked if he had Emerson, Lake & Palmer albums and Warren asked why he was looking for them and his name was Bruce Pilato and he said, "Well, I manage Emerson, Lake & Palmer (AKA The Carl Palmer ELP Experience)" and Warren asked for a business card because in his head he was like, "Sydney Irving!" He had this card in his wallet for three years and he kept telling me I should reach out and for whatever reason I never did. So finally, he decided that he was going to reach out and send my music to Bruce Pilato and he ended up calling and giving him his best Sydney Irving pitch and Bruce really liked it. So, I signed with Pilato Entertainment and he sent "Unfashioned Creatures" the album to Bruce and Charlie at Deko and they really liked it and a week later we signed with Deko and Madison is the best! I love Madison, she came all the way to Syracuse, New York and we shot two music videos together. You can find them on YouTube; one for my song "Move On" which is my latest single and a song called "Something Better" which is more about the new year and finding optimism in the new year. You can find both on YouTube and she's so much fun to hang out with and to make videos with, we had a blast!"

In her relatively short career, Irving has shared a stage with the likes of Starship, Martina McBride, Gavin DeGraw and others as well as graced the spotlight at both large and small venues; does she have a preference?

"I love the intimate thing, I think both are cool. I'm super stoked for these shows. Everybody over at Deko, Charlie (Calv), Bruce (Pucciarello), Madison (Cobb) have been telling me about the venues; I can't wait because it's gonna be awesome. I love the intimate thing because it makes for a special kind of show; you know what I mean? It's a totally different vibe than something where you're farther away."

She will definitely get the chance to enjoy intimacy as the venues on this run are on the smaller side but that also is allowing for her and her band mates to do multiple shows in a day, allowing them to reach even more people in less time; the first of these opportunities is on March 5 in New York and then again on March 6 in NJ and PA.

"Earlier in the day, the band and I are super excited because we were invited to perform at The Recording Academy, New York City chapter but that's not open to the public and later that night we're playing in Manhattan at The Cutting Room. We were talking the other night at band practice and I think it was the guitar player Kyle who said, "We have to get pizza when we go to New York City," so if you know of any spots, let me know (Laughs)."

"It's a full band tour, we're a five piece band," she continued. "So, on the drums it's Billy Eberts, on the bass AD Zimmer, guitar Kyle Cushman and on the keys Ashley Cox. We were just rehearsing the other day, we've got a good setlist and it should be a fun energetic show on March 6 also. Earlier in the day at The Starving Artist Cafe` in Stockton, New Jersey we play at 1 p.m.; it's a shorter set but it's a cool unplugged vibe that I'm really excited for and we're gonna be playing songs from the record and we're gonna throw in a handful of cover songs that we really love and that we want to perform. Then later that night, we'll be in New Hope, Pennsylvania at Cary's Music Room at 8 p.m. and we're playing a full set there so that's probably eh, 90 minutes and we're gonna rock out. So, we have a full day in New Jersey and the next day, March 7 we'll be in Philly at the 2300 Arena at Bar 2300 and then we go back home. I have a show that I guess you can call a homecoming show in Weedsport, New York at a cool spot called Lunkenheimer Craft Brewing Company."

Ah youth, seven shows in five days is a lot and she and the band will also have five days off to recharge their batteries a bit bfore opening for well-known blues man Pat Travers in Rome, NY on March 13; so what's next?

"I'm working on the next record now. Right now we're in the writing stage and deciding what's gonna make the track list and what isn't and then we're gonna get in the studio and start laying down tracks very soon so, I'm super excited but my latest single, "You Can't Forget About Me" is out right now. There is a music video on YouTube where I dance around and rock out a little bit but it's out right now, it's on the new record, it's track one actually."
