Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 02/05/2026

“I want to make sure that I pay homage to three gentlemen because this film was really a group effort because it not only involves filming and talking to people but there is original new music that’s part of the film and Dave, Frank and Tommy have all contributed major pieces to make this thing happen.”

So are the words of filmmaker Art Varga of Lambertville’s Running River Films as he discussed his latest effort titled “Listen Up! Trenton Makes Music” a well-done cinematic journey showcasing a time in Trenton’s music history that is sure to invoke images and memories of youth, excitement, outdoor concerts and a whole lot of nostalgia.

Varga grew up in New Jersey far from the Trenton music scene but it was by him attending Smart Remarks member Tod the Mod’s Starving Artist Café in Stockton where he ran into long time Trenton music maker Frank Pinto, then there was a social media post and well, it just as they say, “Snowballed” from there.

“How this thing got started was, it’s kind of interesting,” laughed Varga during a recent interview on “Danny Coleman’s Rock On Radio.”  “There was a DJ named Tom Cunningham and a Facebook post; Dave Hart and Frank Pinto wrote a song 40 years ago called, “Have You Ever Seen Their Eyes” and it was part of a temporary banding of Trenton musicians who got together to raise funds for the hunger crisis that was going on in Ethiopia. So, it was a tremendous event, tremendously successful, they raised a lot of money, all of the musicians came in and played for gratis. Tom posted a picture of the group from 40 years ago and that photograph just sparked a whole bunch of discussion. I reached out to Frank and asked him to tell me more of what that picture was all about and that I had an idea I wanted to run by him. I didn’t know what it would be but I thought I had an interesting concept. So, I had him and Dave come over to my house and I said, “What if we got this original group back together again and recorded a new song? It is up to you what you want the song to be about.” Now again, world hunger was really the flashpoint 40 years ago but it’s not quite the same today. The whole point was getting these musicians who are still playing together today to reunite, create a song and pay tribute to the music of Trenton and what they did for 40 years. In no time at all, Dave and Frank huddled up and they wrote a song called, “Listen Up!” They came over within a few days with lyrics and music and what was the beginnings of creating this new song. We went to Tom Reock’s Squirrel Ranch Studio in Hamilton and started recording tracks and over a three- or four-month period, we put the whole song together. Meanwhile, I’m filming the whole thing and the whole process of the group coming together again and it became apparent that this was really just one thread in a bigger story about Trenton’s music scene and all of the talent that existed in Trenton back in the day let’s say starting in the ‘60’s. Obviously it goes back before that, if we go back to the days of Duke Williams and some of these notable people whose talent took some of them to the stratosphere or some of them to playing to local audiences who just loved them to death. So, that kind of became the broader story of that time and place in Trenton when music was great, when live music everywhere, when you had talent everywhere; it’s kind of an intertwining of those two stories, the making of this new song with the reunion of all of these Trenton artists and the bigger picture of the Trenton music scene from back then.”

The aforementioned Hart, along with whom many consider the “Absolute” Trenton music historian Tom Krawiec, better known as “Tommy K” did a marvelous job of weaving Trenton’s rich music history into a continuous storyline, wonderfully edited and told through the lens of Varga. What started out as a curiosity about a song became a total memory recall for those of us who grew up in, near or around Trenton when there were bars, restaurants and social clubs on every corner housing entertainment and some of the finest talent in the area.

Through Tommy K’s and Hart’s archives, vinyl records and more, the recollections of Pinto and the deft editing of Varga, viewers are taken on a journey back to places such as The Treasure Chest, Billy D’s Rumrunner, Buddy Rick’s, Smitty’s Kicks, Brothers Saloon, City Gardens and far more than possible to list. Names such as Barbara Trent, Billy Kay, Kenny Chick and bands like Instant Funk, Radiation, Colt 45s, along with mentions of ethnic Italian and polka bands along with local blues hall of famers Paul Plumeri and Joe Zook; bands such as Valentine, Off White, Ernie White and even The Young Monkey Men are represented or mentioned. So, in short, this documentary covers various eras, artists and venues through the eyes of musicians like Pinto, Jerry Monk, Paul Plumeri, Earl Scooter, Andrew “DD” Worek, Joe Kramer, Tom Marolda and Duke Williams who cut their teeth, lived the experiences and built their reputations in the Trenton music scene.

One of the highlights of the film is when Mary Muehleisen, sister of Maury Muehleisen told the story of her late brother’s rise to prominence as Jim Croce’s accompanying guitarist and at times muse. One could feel the emotion swell in the theater as she spoke of Maury’s dreams coming true and then how they were shattered in that Natchitoches, Louisiana plane crash which took his and Croce’s life. In the film, Mary shows us the Gold Record he received for Croce’s “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” and recounts his story so lovingly that when introduced at the film’s completion, she received a standing ovation; as did the film itself which concluded with the song mentioned earlier, “Listen up!”

“Listen Up!” was recorded at Tom Reock’s Squirrel Ranch studio and it features, many of those who recorded “Have You Ever Seen Their Eyes” plus additions Meg Hanson, Billy Hill, Jerry Monk, Bob Scannella and more and it was the perfect bow atop this fine package as it mentions forgotten places, people and things in a touching tribute to Trenton and the musicians who made the music.

Trenton’s music scene was so vast that it is impossible to name all who built it and Varga readily admits that he knows there are missing pieces to the puzzle but his hope of shedding some light on this area’s history and the characters who created it so that others may learn, in the words of Tommy K, “About New Jersey’s West Coast,” has definitely been fulfilled.

After the premier on January 31, there was a brief thank you given by Pinto and Varga, solo musical performances by Pinto, Jerry Monk and Paul Plumeri and then a Q & A. During this, audience members were treated to a slideshow of photos from gone but not forgotten bands such as Castle Brown, Creed, Zye, The Coachmen, Aviator, Sam the Band and even Valhalla who recorded at Tom Marolda’s Songgram Studio at the age of 15 and luckily won some favor with a couple of WPST DJs who featured them on several occasions.

“Listen Up! Trenton Makes Music” goes beyond just documenting a music scene. It is thought provoking, emotional and very informative and deserving of one’s attention.

The BBD Rhythm & Blues Band headlines with James "JB" Barnes opening as he celebrates the release of his latest record, "My Mississippi Roots" which features the recording, production and guitar work of the great Anthony Krizan.  Show time is 8 p.m. and admission is free.

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
