Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 01/22/2026

"Rinny," that is correct, it's my first album ever but I do have an acoustic one coming shortly too but that has all different songs on it than the "Rinny" album," said a very enthusiastic Amber West as her debut album "Rinny" is releasing on Friday January 23.

Some artists take years to learn how to play an instrument and others begin writing their own music and songs only after years of being held back for reasons ranging from lack of confidence to lack of desire but neither is the case with West; well, only if you count being a shy youth lack of confidence.

"When I was young," she said with a slight laugh, "If there was a little studio in the mall or somewhere, my mom would always say, "Hey, why don't we go in there and do that?" I was always too shy and so, when Billy Ray of Billy Ray & The Bad Boys asked me to go into Studio 6 and lay down some backing vocals for him, it was almost like an epiphany moment. So, I was like, I need to do my own thing, I need to get my stuff out there and that's really what happened; I kept in touch with the guys at Studio 6 and they told me they wanted to record my stuff and I was like, alright let's do it!"

"I've only been playing guitar for two years now and I think I've progressed a long way," she continued with a laugh. "When I picked up the guitar, I didn't do any classes or anything like that, I watched a YouTube video of somebody playing Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me" and I learned the picking part by watching the guy's fingers and I was like, ya' know what? Why don't I see how these other strings sound? I'd start writing songs that way; I'd find some sounds I liked and sing over top of them. Lyrics always come pretty easy because I've been writing my whole life and I've been singing my whole life so, music and melody come pretty easily to me."

Going from "Singing my whole life" to writing songs, arranging them and then having the intestinal fortitude to perform them live has begun what this space feels is akin to tipping over that first domino as West has made huge strides in a very short time and like other artists, she discloses that her art is "Personal."

"There are seven songs on the produced album, "Rinny" is actually my childhood nickname. My middle name is Corrine and my family always called me "Amber Rin" or "Rinny" and it's basically like me healing her. So, a lot of the songs are very personal to me. I guess I leave the lyrics open for interpretation, however you feel the song speaks to you and whatever but to me they have a lot deeper meaning and if you knew the stories behind them, you'd kind of understand where I was going with the lyrics. That's me and my partner in crime on the cover, my little cousin Justina; she was more like my sister growing up because we were always together. So, I decided to put her on the cover with me because we went through so much together as kids, ya' know?"

Growing up in and around Southern New Jersey as well as across the mighty Delaware River in Pennsylvania has served her well and has influenced who she is and those experiences found on this release but now that it will be released to masses; what's next?

"I'm gonna get it everywhere I can get it and I'm writing for the next one," she said confidently. "I'm just gonna keep spreading it around, get it wherever I can get it, get plays on it and see what happens. I'm actually booked pretty much until July; I've got a couple of months open so maybe I'll look around. I just branched out into Delaware and I want to keep moving around as much as I can. I actually grew up in Philly and South Jersey. I'm from the Harrogate area of Philly and the Sicklerville and National Park areas of New Jersey. I've bounced around in those three areas my whole life and now I'm in Elmer for the last 10 years or so. I'm gonna give a little shout out to Jenni Schick who runs The Women's Coalition of Delaware and she books these little showcases; she calls them an open mic but they are more like showcases, she collects tips for us and spreads them out at the end and I think that is really cool considering I run Fierce & Fretted, a New Jersey chapter of something similar and we do showcases at least once, maybe twice a month. So, I branched out over there and it was awesome meeting all of these different artists that I've not met in the Jersey area and to network around, it was really cool."

Fierce & Fretted? Do tell Amber; what is this and where can we find it?

"Fierce & Fretted, we have a show at 5 p.m. on January 23 at VF Entertainment in West Deptford. Fierce & Fretted is myself and five other musicians, Leanne Tursi, Janine Graham, Kara Ferguson, Jay Runyon and Amy Sklar and we showcase female talent throughout New Jersey. We started in March of last year and we've been gaining traction. We've had breweries reach out to us to bring our show there, so we're like a traveling showcase of female artists. The six of us that I just named, we call ourselves "The Core Group" and we play at every show and we have shows where it's just The Core Group and we have other ones where we have special guests and we'll have new female artists come in for those ones and we keep it moving."

Recently, West was honored at the well-known and respected Elephant Talk Indie Music Awards, something which makes her very happy.

"I've won an award and everything, I'm kicking butt," she said with a sincere laugh. "I won an award for "Best Singer Songwriter Track of the Year" for "Fill Up Your Cup" which is actually on the "Rinny" album which I released in 2024 or 2025 as a single but we added it to the album because it's a good song. We recorded the album at Studio 6 with Mike Cattell who played keys, bass and produced it with John Tubic on all drums and percussion. I had local artists come in and do backing vocals, my friend Johnny Trombone playing trombone on "Still" and the cello on "Fool" is Lady Zen who is also featured in our Fierce & Fretted community; I try to keep it all natural, all organic, all human."

MORE NEWS

(RED BANK, NJ) -- Join Asbury Park Theater Company as they celebrate Joe Cocker's groundbreaking live album and tour, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, on Saturday, February 14, 2026 on the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre stage at the Count Basie Center for the Arts. The show, previously announced as a two-night event at Ocean Grove's Jersey Shore Arts Center, makes a sudden surprise move to the Basie due to special demand and limitations for audience and production at the OG venue. An exciting move for the growing and evolving theater company, this is the first time Remember Jones will bring this show to the Basie stage.
