Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites... 01/15/2026

"I'm doing fantabulous today. I'm from Berlin, Maryland, it's a very small town, one street light, lots of cops and everyone knows each other," chuckled young singer-songwriter Callum who will be making the trip up from the Terrapin state for two February shows, the first of which is at Flounder Brewing in Hillsborough, NJ and the second on February 22 at John & Peter's in New Hope, PA as part of Mike Montrey's Songwriter Showcase.

Callum's fledgling career has gotten off to a great start, performing over a wide swath of the Eastern Seaboard, she has gained experience abroad; which seemingly is more attention grabbing than her local scene. Perhaps the torch just hasn't been passed yet?

"The music scene down here; I don't want to dog on my own town and the musicians but sometimes we get pretty cool musicians, something that's new comes into town and we're like wow, this is really cool but a lot of the time it's the tired musicians who think they can still get it on but they can't."

That's a pretty blunt yet fair assessment of many a music scene where the old guard still has control but could that be because there is no new guard to consistently mount a challenge? Callum doesn't seem concerned as she focuses on her music and with two EPs and some singles, her mother's guidance, an intense writing style and a bit of an edge, she's on the right track.

"Katy Perry was a major influence," she explained. "I play ukulele, piano and guitar. I haven't played piano in a very long time; I'd say it has been a few months since I've really honed my piano skills. The way I write music is extremely weird. Usually I can't just sit down and decide to write a song, it has to be the right moment where I get a spark of inspiration which usually is around twelve to four a.m. where I write the best of songs and the most songs. I usually always write with guitar; I come up with a chord progression and then a melody on top of that and then lyrics. I've only written a handful of songs on piano, I don't usually write music on piano, it's harder for me for some reason. I pretty much write about what every other young person writes about (Laughs). I try not to go the sad route with my music. I've only written one love song and the rest of it; I've written music about my sister, I write a lot of songs when I'm angry. That is when I write the most, when I'm really, really angry. I wish I knew why it's easier to write when angry. I feel like when you're angry, it makes it hard to express yourself when you're fuming but for me, when I sit down and I'm really angry and start writing music, I can fully express myself better than if I were just talking. I'm the type of person, that when I'm angry, I'll just explode; that's just the kind of person I've always been. A lot of the time, what helps me feel better is writing and poetry, I've always enjoyed writing music and poetry."

Berlin is not more than a few hour car ride away from the New York and Philadelphia areas but yet finding gigs in those metropolises is not an easy task for those who inhabit them let alone outsiders; how did she find herself with these gigs and local promoter Kat Falcey?

"So, we have always been playing in New York and Jersey and my mom, she is very pushy and she's really good at her job and right now, she is my mom and my manager at the moment which is very hard but she's good at her job and she finds ways for me to play places. I think where it started was when I was like 14 or 15 years old, I played at The Bitter End in New York City and things just kind of sparked from there. We'd meet people along the way and they'd tell someone about me and it just gets back to different places but what happened with Kathleen Falcey was, my mom found her on Facebook and she texted her and said, "Hey, I'd really like to work with you, my daughter is a singer-songwriter" and Kathleen texted her back and said, "Well, I'm retired but I would love to work with you." So, we brought her out of retirement and now we're working together. I'm very grateful for everything she has done, even though we've only been working together for a very short time, she's on it."

Again, Callum is a young artist who has other interests beside music and given her age, she hasn't had a wealth of experience to influence her songwriting; something of which she is very much aware.

"People can find me on pretty much every streaming platform but people can find me just by searching Callum. I have two EPs out and a handful of singles. I am working on a long project at the moment, an album but I haven't been angry recently so it's hard for me to write (Laughs). I feel like my mom sometimes, you know, mom and manager, I feel that she sometimes gets nervous when I don't write and it's kind of hard to explain to someone who isn't a musician or is not a writer that sometimes it takes a lot of time. I've also not had exciting things happen in my life. Sometimes I get in my own head a lot and don't really focus on what's happening around me, sometimes I get lazy, sometimes I get bored, sometimes I get complacent and I feel like it's hard for me to get out of that sometimes."

"It's taken me a long time to get to the point where I think my music is decent," she continued, "For a while I really hated my music. I couldn't listen to my voice, I hated my songwriting but I think since I've gotten older; the majority of my songs I wrote when I was 13 or 14 and I released them when I was 17 but as I'm getting older, I'm kind of realizing that maybe I am good at this and maybe I have a shot at being something bigger than I ever thought I could be but for me, it's definitely something I can't live without. The longer I think about it, the more I realized that if I stopped music, I wouldn't be able to fully stop, I'd always be writing something, I'd always be playing, I'd always have that want to do music. So, it's definitely something that I can't live without."

Over the last year, she has been very busy and her releases have reflected just how her "Anger" affects her art.

"I don't Need You" was written when I was extremely angry; I wrote it when I got into an argument with my biological sister and it was a pretty solid argument; I'd never argued with anybody like that before, words were said that I had never spoken to anybody. I feel guilty now when I sing that song out because we weren't in contact for almost three years and we recently just got back in contact and so now I feel guilty when I sing that song (Laughs) but some of the stuff I didn't mean and some of the stuff I still do mean. You can only help somebody that wants to be helped and it's really hard to help somebody who is in a position that they don't want to get out of; this song is on my EP called, "You Know Who." I named it that because all of the songs are about the same person; I thought that was pretty clever for someone who was 14, I still think it was pretty smart (Laughs). I have a second EP, it's called "The Present Past," I released my EPs a year apart which really shocked me because I had no idea I could write like that. That one isn't as much of my baby as the first one because the first EP really means a lot to me because it was strictly all my ideas. i came up with the name, the title, the songs, all of it was written by me and so, that was really special. The second one, I had a co-writer and stuff like that; the first one is my baby. My song "Champagne," everybody is entitled to their own opinions and thoughts about my music and I want people to interpret it however they want to but over time, this song has really stuck out for me; it has the most streams on platforms; "Champagne" for me is just lyrically and sonically, it's my favorite to perform, play and sing. I get a really good reception when I play it and it also has a really deep meaning to me. I wrote it about someone I was dating who had a drug addiction and many other addictions that I will not get into butI was angry once again and wrote that song about them and kind of use it for mental health and drug awareness and things like that."

The Hillsborough and New Hope gigs will see Callum as part of showcase type events which means that she will be solo on stage.

"The Flounder Brewery and Mike Montrey's showcase, I'll be there solo, there will be other performers but I'll be solo. I have a really good band but I'll be solo. My set will be either 20 or 45 minutes."

February will be here before we know it but alas, Callum will return in March in the southernmost part of New Jersey.

"I'm constantly busy, I'll be at the Cape May Songwriter Festival in March and I'll be opening for the main act on Saturday night at Congress Hall. I'm really excited and again, none of this would have been possible without Kathleen Falcey. A couple of years ago I was at the Cape May Songwriter Festival and I had a great time and again, that's thanks to Kathleen."
