Rock On! This Week's Sound Bite...10/30/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 10/30/2025

"I'm doing well on this nippy day, it's a little chilly," laughed songstress Carol Lester whose Sea & Sky Songwriters series renews November 8 for another year at Mutiny Beach BBQ inside Asbury Park's Convention Hall located at 1300 Ocean Avenue.

No stranger to music and the arts, Lester is a singer, a songwriter, producer, sync agent, award winner and more who has connections to both the New Jersey and New York music scenes which has led her to create this monthly series that features friends, colleagues and connections amassed from her years of collaborating and performing.

"It's actually our second year and this is the first show of the new season and it's called, "Sea & Sky Songwriters" and the first show is gonna be Saturday November 8 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mutiny Beach which is a restaurant and bar inside Convention Hall on the boardwalk in Asbury Park," she started enthusiastically. "The first show is going to feature Jo Wymer, Pam McCoy and Jim Ferrante along with special guests Leah Thompson and Alex Sanders and I'm the hostess. The idea behind it is; I've known a lot of these writers for a long time but everybody loves them for their feel good, summer-happy, drunken cover bands, right? A lot of them are fantastic songwriters; Jo had a song in "The Handmaid's Tale" and so, the people I feature, maybe you already love them because you love their bands but maybe you didn't realize what really talented songwriters they are on their own. This is a little bit more of an upfront intimate environment where they can talk about the songs and introduce them and people may come and join them on bass or sax or whatever but it's not gonna blast you out of the room, you'll be able to hear the lyrics they've worked so hard on."

Wymer and McCoy are tireless performers who can be found working year round along the Jersey Shore, even when Winter's cold grip stifles attendance at many venues which were swollen to capacity only months before and whose original material is some of the best around. Thompson, Sander and Ferrante add a great mix of youth, experience and talent to this fantastic lineup which each month will continue to host some of the best local and regional talent the area has to offer.

"Everybody is going to get a half-an-hour and then we have a couple of songs that we're going to do together and kind of jam on; it should be really good as you know the musicianship of everybody in the room," continued Lester. "Then as the season goes on, we're gonna have Ryan Gregg who is the Ocean Avenue Stompers piano player, Debra Devi, Chuck Lambert, Cranston Dean and Ms. G and the guys; do you know Ms. G? Her new band has a lot of the old favorites with a couple of new people and each of them is a songwriter and just a fantastic musician. So, he very next show in December 6 is going to be Ms. G and her band but all of the different people in her band are doing solo acoustic and doing their songs as well so it should be really interesting. I saw her band in Springwood Park in Asbury Park on a Monday night at the end of the summer, I know she is recording some music so I'm really looking forward to her show."

Although the artists will focus more on their own material, they may throw in some re-imagined cover tunes but one thing is certain, this free event will keep Lester busy each month; as well as multiple other things on her schedule.

"They may throw in a couple of their favorite covers but we are focusing mostly on their originals," she emphasized once again. "There is no cover charge, if you want to do a five dollar donation that would be greatly appreciated but please come thirsty and hungry because we want to make sure that the venue has us back every month. I'm also about to start up another series in New York in the East Village at Fish Bar and it will probably be called "Fish Bar Features" and I have other news; I've been doing an album of Jazz standards with my pianist and longtime friend Peter Moffitt who is a fantastic jazz pianist. Actually, it might be in the Warner Chappell music catalog, it's all sorts of beautiful songs. My dad would have been very happy, he was a singer and he used to love singing those things; "It Had To Be You" and "Someone To Watch Over Me," "Blue Skies," "Bye Bye Blackbird," a lot of really beautiful songs. So, most of my new stuff I've been releasing on Bandcamp/CarolLester because Spotify now made this deal with the AI companies and somehow, their language, that we all signed off on included something like, and any new technology that comes its way, you've also agreed to and so, everyone whose music is streaming on Spotify right now, that music can be knocked off, it can be used by AI for them to feed into, maybe copy your voice or your music."

Well, they may copy voices or music but they will never be the same as seeing these artists live. So, to discover more about the Sea & Songwriters series or Carol Lester, please visit https://carollester.com/ and to hear this interview in its entirety, tune into thepenguinrocks.com or dekoentertainment.com on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. EST as Carol discusses this very event on "Danny Coleman's Rock On Radio."

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
