Flisadam Pointer

As a small child, Flisadam Pointer was riddled with almost debilitating social anxiety. This condition led to delayed speech development. After being introduced to the world of music, she slowly began to come out of her shell and there's been no turning back since.

From shifting through her father's crates filled with vinyl records to sneakily raiding her older sister's blossoming CD collection, music has always served as a therapeutic outlet for the rambunctious child. As she entered her early pre-teen years, Flisadam began to explore the world of performing arts at a much larger scale.

From performing in her school's annual theatre productions, singing with the youth ensemble, participating in the youth improv programs to writing and performing original songs for close friends and family, Flisadam knew when she grew up she was going to work in the entertainment industry. She just didn't know it what capacity! After discovering the music video countdown show, 106 & Park, that vision become much more clear.

With her eyes set on becoming a television VJ, Flisadam opted out of attending a traditional high school instead she wanted to attend a technical school that would equip her with all of the tools necessary to make her dream a reality. In 2006, Flisadam landed at Essex County Vocational Technical Career Center's Newark Tech campus ready to test the waters.

In her sophomore year, Flisadam joined the high school's newsletter but the adventure was short-lived due to her involvement in other extracurricular activities. The following year, through a classmate, Flisadam was introduced to the Quest Community Vibration student radio program. The mentorship program trained high school students on the ins and outs of radio broadcasting at Seton Hall University's student radio station, WSOU 89.5 FM.

Heavily influenced by on-air personalities Angie Martinez, Miss Jones, Deja Vu, Egypt, and Wendy Williams, Flisadam was excited to learn the inner workings of FM radio. On her first day of the program, Flisadam arrived early and eager to study under her assigned peer mentor but as the start of the broadcast quickly approached the mentor never showed. With no one to fill in for the live show, feeding off of all that she learned from her radio role models, Flisadam finished the show with the help of Quest Community Vibration's program director and engineer, Richard Bey. She would continue to lead the show for nearly the remainder of her high school career.

After graduating high school in 2010, Flisadam went on to attend Virginia State University, a historically Black university located in the city of Petersberg, Virginia. Her student radio career continued at the campus' student station, WVST 91.3 FM, as she volunteered in the underwriting department. Flisadam assisted in producing a segment on-air that broadcasted upcoming social events on campus.

In 2011, after transferring to Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus, where she would complete her undergraduate studies, Flisadam quickly hit the ground running. Rutgers provided ample opportunities for her to explore the field of entertainment journalism in much more depth both inside and outside of the classroom. Those opportunities included writing for the School of Communications' alumni newspaper, becoming a contributing writer for the online publication New Jersey Newsroom, co-directing a music video for local musician Ray Pond and interviewing Blue Note Records' recording artist José James.

Outside of the classroom, Flisadam began fostering her social media management skills while working as both a contributing writer and social media manager for student-run magazine Black Voice Carta Latina. She continued expanding on her radio resume adding the title on-air talent as she co-hosted, Music Is Life, on Rutgers' The Core 90.3 FM in 2011. In 2012 she added certified radio jockey to her lists of achievements after securing a solo show title "Envert Radio" on Rutgers Radio, WRSU 88.7 FM. For two years, Flisadam booked on-air interviews, live performances, event coverage, and press packaging for some of the area's biggest artists most notably, NBC's The Voice Felicia Temple. Flisadam has since converted her then on-campus radio show, ENVERT Radio into a highly respected digital news platform to showcase the work of independent entertainers such as Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter J.Lauryn, Nikki Jean, and more.

After securing an internship in her junior year at the historic performing arts venue, Newark Symphony Hall, Flisadam was finally able to merge her passion for the arts and her newly acquired marketing skills. As the social media intern, she learned key skills in event management, public relations for entertainers & entertainment venues, advertising for the performing arts, and event production.

After successfully completing her internship, Flisadam was invited to join the staff at Newark Symphony Hall. The venue continued to mold her love of the arts whether it was granting her access to interview recording legends like Jeffrey Osborne and The Whispers, packing press materials for Zeola Gaye (sister of the late Marvin Gaye), assisting on the venue's original production 'Gospel at the Roots' concert featuring Grammy award winner and Gospel legend Richard Smallwood, serving as an artist assistant for the hit stage play 'My Brother Marvin', photographing live performances at the venue which included capturing original images of recording legend and pioneer Smokey Robinson, Dottie Peoples and more or heading the production team for the venue's annual When Praises Go Up! Gospel Showcase, a showcase for rising Gospel ministries throughout the state.

After returning to Rutgers in 2015 to begin her graduate studies in digital media, the years of working with or alongside established entertainers, Flisadam couldn't help but feel that newer artists were being overlooked. She began to focus her efforts on researching how social media could be leveraged to help independent and self-funded entertainers make a living off of their art. Her thesis paper did just that! A case study of Columbia Records' singer and songwriter Solange's album A Seat at the Table's marketing rollout provided the analytical insight she needed.

After graduating from the University's Master of Communication and Media (formerly Master of Communication and Information Studies) program in 2017, Flisadam went on to briefly work for historic performance venue State Theatre New Jersey, as a freelancer on campaigns for Grammy award-winning Gospel artist Tasha Cobbs-Leonard & comedian Marcus D. Wiley, moderating panels talks such as the IAM Impact panel with rap icon Rah Digga and Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Maya Azucena, and so much more. In 2018, she returned to her alma mater to teach digital marketing strategy and has been there since. Flisadam also serves as the executive director for the non-profit organization, the Independent Entertainment Media Coalition where she advocates for freelance entertainment journalists and media figures' rights.
