bergenPAC presents Tower of Power

originally published: 02/08/2024

(ENGLEWOOD, NJ) -- Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC) presents Tower of Power – 56th Anniversary Tour on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at 7:00pm. For over 55 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music.

“We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there, and my brother was the drummer. I met ‘Doc’ Kupka back in 1968 and gave him an audition.”

East Bay Grease defined the group’s sound and landed them with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on the Billboard 200 and R&B Albums chart with the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down to The Nightclub.” The ‘70s were a boom period with radio classics like “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?,” and the band continued to tour and record over the years.

They returned to Oakland to celebrate their landmark 50th anniversary. The band has long since surpassed Castillo’s modest aspirations, traveling the world, enjoying hit singles on their own and backing legendary artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, and countless others. In the process they’ve defined an “Oakland soul” sound as instantly recognizable as those from Castillo’s hometown, Detroit, as well as inspirations like Memphis and Philadelphia.

Tickets range from $49-$85 and are available for purchase online starting Friday, Feberuary 9, 2024 at 11:00am. Tickets are also available by calling bergenPAC's Box Office at (201) 227-1030.

Eddie

Eddie Skuller to pay tribute to Tom Waits in Hoboken

(HOBOKEN, NJ) -- Looking for the heart of Saturday night? Find it in Hoboken on Saturday, May 10, 2025 when the 503 Social Club presents singer/songwriter Eddie Skuller's tribute to the "Ballads of Tom Waits." Skuller explores the dark, poetic world of Tom Waits with diverse selections from his extensive catalog. Although Skuller's amber-saturated vocals contrast with Wait's raucous gravel-like voice, there is a connection channeled through the music's emotional depth and lyrical intensity. Skuller can forge a deep, powerful bond with his audience, which enhances the tragic expression at the core of Waits' music.

On Banjo

'On Banjo' with Alison Brown

There was a time when I would have told you that my knowledge of the banjo was limited to whom I considered one of the most famous banjo players, who also happens to be my favorite musical amphibian, Mr. Kermit The Frog. "The Rainbow Connection" a la "The Muppet Movie" as performed by the little green dude, the world's greatest producer, was my first introduction to the string instrument and will forever hold a special place in my heart.
