Patti Smith To Perform Free Show In Central Park On Sunday

(NEW YORK, NY) -- On Sunday, September 19, NYC icon Patti Smith And Her Band will perform for free in Central Park at 7:00pm as part of the Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage series. Doors are at 5:00pm. SummerStage now requires proof of full vaccination for all guests, with masks required upon entry and encouraged for the duration of the performance.

An icon of downtown New York City art and culture, Patti Smith’s legacy is tightly woven into the fabric of its history. One of the first acts to break out of the CBGB scene in the early 70s, her brand of hard-nosed rock and roll was infused with the spirit of experimentation and free expression that made downtown Manhattan so exciting. Horses, her debut LP for Arista, remains a classic of the form, inspiring such groups as R.E.M., the Smiths, and Hole that would become legendary in their own right.

Later in her career, she would establish herself as a crucial voice of activism, using her platform to speak out against unjust wars and oppression, and her songs, like the anthemic “People Have the Power,” have resonated with people around the globe. Immune to trends and waves of popularity, Smith continues to record and perform well into her 70s. Her latest projects include a trilogy of albums with the Soundwalk Collective, an exploration into the travels of three French writers comprising field recordings from waypoints along their journeys, imagining a future through conversations with the past.

Smith, who grew up in South Jersey, graduated from Deptford Township High School in 1964. She is part of the 2021 class of inductees into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.

In response to the increasing spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage recently announced that all guests will be required to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination in order to enter shows at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park and Coney Island Amphitheater. Those who are not able to be vaccinated because of a disability will be provided reasonable accommodation and will be required to wear masks at all times. Children under the age of 12 who are not able to receive the vaccination may accompany their fully vaccinated parent or guardian. All children between the ages of 2 and 12 will be asked to wear masks at all times if they are physically able. Venue capacity may be limited at staff discretion.

Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...4/18/24

"I tell everyone that I'm the last surviving original member of my band, however I had a 50/50 chance where some other guys didn't," laughed John Ford Coley as he reflected upon his former partnership with the late England Dan, current bands with no original members, his very loyal fan base and his fellow mellow rockers as they get ready to bring "Rock The Dock" to Englewood, NJ for a night of some of the greatest adult contemporary and easy listening tunes ever created.
