(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- Individuals interested in careers in the field of cybersecurity are invited to join Ocean County College Professor Jonathan Weiss on April 1 at 1:00pm for a virtual presentation: OCC’s Cybersecurity Curriculum Career Paths. The event is the latest installment of the college’s monthly Cybersecurity Seminar Series. 

Cybersecurity is a top-10 growing employment area, according to the World Economic Forum, and OCC’s curriculum is designed to support multiple lucrative career paths in the field. Courses emphasize hands-on experiential learning linked to industry-recognized certifications from CompTIA, EC Council and Amazon Web Services, to prepare students for employment as information security analysts, ethical hackers/penetration testers, digital forensics specialists, and cloud computing practitioners.  

Professor Weiss will provide an overview of the curriculum, including key courses, certifications supported by the program, and potential careers for students who complete the coursework. He will also discuss the cloud laboratory assets that provide an opportunity for hands-on learning, and grant funding that allows students to pursue cybersecurity certifications following successful completion of the courses.

Jonathan Weiss is a lecturer at Ocean County College and the principle developer of its Cybersecurity curriculum. He runs OCC’s monthly Cybersecurity Seminar Series, featuring industry luminaries from such organizations as Mandiant/FireEye, T-Mobile, AT&T, TAG Cyber, Google Project Zero, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. Professor Weiss came to OCC’s Dept. of Computer Science after a 38-year career as a telecommunications professional across the various corporate parent owners of Bell Laboratories.

Weiss' career included a range of cybersecurity roles, including: 

• Lead system engineer for UNIXSystem V/MLS, the first general purpose operating system evaluated by the U.S. Department of Defense for multilevel secure operations. 


• Interface developer for ComputerWatch™, an early security information and event management system. 


• Application and popularization of the use of tree constructs as a means of decomposing security threats and assessing associated risk for the Strategic Defense Initiative. 


• Security officer for a hosted voice over IP (VOIP) Centrex service. 


• Leadership of vulnerability assessment of products delivered to a national telecom provider. 


• Chief architect and design lead for a U.S. 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular network.
