Hopewell Theater 5 S. Greenwood Avenue, Hopewell, NJ 08525
Unsinkable Women is based on actual diaries, letters and interviews brought to life with nine famous figures from the Titanic.
It offers colorful portrayals with wigs, costumes and props punctuated with vaudeville numbers from the period.
Deborah Jean transforms from character to character in full view of the audience. Internationally acclaimed as a remarkable tour-de-force, Unsinkable Women has been called "the most affecting and truthful version of the Titanic story to date." Jim Morgan, York Theatre, NYC
Deborah Jean Templin toured in the Peter Stone / Maury Yeston Tony award-winning musical Titanic, a New Musical, from 1998 to 2000 covering the roles of seven women on the ship. It was during this tour she became intrigued with the original music of the period and the lives of the women survivors. While performing in over 45 cities throughout the United States she began her site specific research at the homes of Titanic survivors and the nation's libraries.
Some of the figures include: Madeleine Astor, the beautiful teenage bride of John Jacob Astor, one of the wealthiest men in America; Margaret Tobin Brown - the "Unsinkable Molly" herself - whose account of the Titanic's final moments brings the evening to its dramatic climax; Violet Jessop, who tells of the friendships and loves of the below-decks serving crew and Nora, an English music hall performer on her way to New York to appear in American vaudeville.
Accompaniment and musical underscoring was created by Music Director C. Colby Sachs, choreography by Broadway veteran Ron Schwinn, period costumes design by Dr. Sara Jablon-Roberts and direction by Nancy Robillard.
"With this vibrant and engaging piece of intimate theatre, Deborah Jean Templin has captured a vital snapshot of social and musical history. Unsinkable Women reveals the ambition and tragedy of the Titanic in a way that no other vehicle has. It should not be missed!" — Dr. Ken Cerniglia, Dramaturg & Literary Manager, Disney Theatrical Productions
