The ShowRoom presents a 50th Anniversary Screen of the Cult Classic, "The Last of Sheila"

originally published: 04/05/2023

(ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- The ShowRoom Cinema invites you back to 1973 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of The Last of Sheila with a one time only screening on Sunday, April 16 at 3:15pm. Touted by Knives Out and Glass Onion director, Rian Johnson, as a primary inspiration, The Last of Sheila harks back to the golden age of star-studded murder mysteries.

The brainchild of actor Anthony Perkins and composer Stephen Sondheim, and directed by Herbert Ross, The Last of Sheila picks up a year after Hollywood gossip columnist Sheila Greene is killed by a hit-and-run driver. Her successful producer husband (James Corburn) invites a group of showbiz acquaintances to spend a week on his yacht playing a scavenger hunt mystery game. The purpose — to expose the person responsible for his wife’s demise. His guests include a struggling screenwriter (Richard Benjamin) and his wealthy wife (Joan Hackett), a has-been director (James Mason), a fading starlet (the recently departed screen siren Raquel Welch at her height), her ambitious manager/boyfriend (Ian McShane) and a cutthroat talent agent (scene-stealer Dyan Cannon).

A scathing satire of archetypes, clichés and tropes, The Last of Sheila is a wickedly funny dagger to the heart of Hollywood. While relishing in both cheekiness and cynicism, it will have you guessing until its final frame. It’s a film so clever that even the title is a clue!

“A devilishly complicated thriller of superior class... It’s the kind of movie that wraps you up in itself, and absorbs you at the very time you’re being impressed by its cleverness.” Roger Ebert

The ShowRoom Cinema, Asbury Park’s home to Movies & More, is located at 707 Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
