Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...6/5/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 06/05/2025

"Well, I had the great pleasure a few years back of interviewing most of the musicians who played on "Highway 61 Revisited," Dylan's 1965 album, one of his 1965 albums which in my view is still the greatest album ever made by anybody. After all of the magazine features, there was a vast whole of interview material that didn't make it to the articles just because of limited space and I always felt that one day it would make the crux of a good book and this being the 60th anniversary year of Dylan going electric and of "Highway 61" so it seemed an opportune moment."

"Decade Of Dissent How 1960s Bob Dylan Changed The World" is the latest book by prolific author Sean Egan which was released on May 20 of this current year and it offers insight into how not just Dylan's music changed the course of the world but how it has affected musicians and artists ever since.

Recently, Egan took some time to discuss the book, Dylan himself, his likes and dislikes and much more.

"I've always been a fan but I got into music quite late," he began. "I wasn't into music until I was about 15, I was into comics and reading. When I started getting into music, it was '60s music I was into even though I was a '70s and '80s kid. I had the good fortune of listening to the best first or maybe the bad fortune whichever way you want to look at it; one of the early albums I was introduced to was "Highway 61." So, if you're going to be convinced to get into rock music, that was the best way to go about it."

Not a bad introduction to an artform at all but he did bristle a bit when this writer suggested sarcastically that it was Dylan's incredible vocal tones that lured him in.

"I do think he has a stunning voice," he stated emphatically. "I think his vocal performance on "Like A Rolling Stone" is one of the greatest vocal performances of all time. He can sing beautifully; on "Blood On The Tracks," which is about divorce, his 1975 album, he sings heartbreakingly. There is a track called, "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" and his voice is particularly husky and vulnerable on that one. Although it's not a conventional singing voice, I think it's a very good singing voice and obviously his lyrics as well; he's the poet laureate of rock 'n' roll and he can write both colloquially and poetically as well as literally and metaphorically, he's just a dazzling lyrical talent. "Blood On The Tracks" was an interesting album for a couple of reasons because it was the first album by the '60s co-op that proved they weren't all Has-Beens because in the early '70s, most releases were all underwhelming and "Blood On the Tracks" was the first classic that anyone of that generation had made since about '73 that proved they could still do it and it's also an album that he couldn't have made in the '60s because you have to had lived a life to write songs of heartbreak like that."

Egan is staunch in his belief that Dylan's transition from an acoustic to electric artist had a grand effect on not just folk artists but those in the rock and pop worlds as well but more importantly on the fans of those latter two genres.

"It's an opinion that "Highway 61" is the greatest album ever made, it's not so much an opinion that it had a seismic effect on music and by extension on society. Dylan going electric and becoming a pop star or a rock star exposed young people to ideas that they had never been exposed to before. Can you imagine Beatles fans converted to Dylan by his new sound? Imagine that kid listening to, let's say, "Desolation Row" really expanding their minds and political consciousness and that spread out through society because music was the meeting place for young people in the '60s; he really did change the world by bringing intellectual and political content to popular music that it never had before."

It's no secret that his persona was one of mystery each time he stepped on a stage and Egan says he has a finger on the pulse as to why Dylan may have been this way.

"Highway 61 had a significance for Dylan because that was the highway out from his hometown; he came from the Canadian border. He felt very stifled by his upbringing. He never wanted for anything materially as he was from a solidly middle-class family but he felt very stifled and had a lot of resentment toward his father who was a bit of an authoritarian and lacking in compassion in many ways and this all manifested in the songs he began writing in 1963. The first couple of chapters are devoted to that because they do underpin, as with every human being, the childhood and teenage years do underpin the person you become and the values that you adopt. It is quite obvious that Dylan did have a sort of simmering resentment about many of the things he went through as a child and it's manifested most bizarrely in the song, "When The Ship Comes In" which was on his third album "The Times They Are A Changing" and it's a song that he famously wrote after being turned away from a hotel by a pompous desk clerk because of his scruffy appearance. He sat down and in a fury dashed out this song of apocalyptic vengeance; there must be something simmering deep inside you to react in such an extreme way to such a relatively trivial incident."

Oftentimes when writing a book about someone, anyone, the subject will consent to an interview but Bob Dylan historically has given very few and gives even less now. Did Egan get to speak with him?

"I submitted an interview request and with absolutely no hope that he would acquiesce; he doesn't give many interviews and he's the most written about recording artist post Elvis Presley. In the '90s, I think there was a book published called, "Oh No, Not Another Bob Dylan Book." So, if he were to give an interview to everybody who has written about him, it would be a fulltime job. Obviously, he has given interviews down the years and I did quite extensive rows and have my own batch of interviews with those who had worked with or had been friends with him. It didn't take long to write the book actually because I already had the raw material from those interviews that had been sitting around for years. I am quite a quick writer; this is my 36th book. I don't consider myself a hack or anything, I don't hurry anything but somehow, I'm able to write quickly. I think the difference between me and other writers is that a lot of other writers agonize over their sentences or paragraphs and can't move on until they've got it to their satisfaction. I just get it down and just hum and hum and hum until I'm happy with it or the deadline is upon me."

As Egan pointed out, there are many books written about Bob Dylan but he hopes that those Dylan fans boh old and perhaps new who read his latest effort all take away the icon's importance.

"I think it has something to offer to people who know a lot about Dylan and for the people who are new to him. The people who are new to him; I hope to give them an idea as to why he was so important because as time moves on, these things seem to disappear into the cracks. In 1965, the folk audience and the rock/pop audiences were completely different demographics. Folk was intellectual and serious and pop and rock were mostly frivolous; although they were exciting, they didn't have much intellectual content. Nobody had ever thought of mashing those two things together because they assumed that nobody would be interested in such a hybrid but Dylan going electric in 1965, bringing poetry and socio-political content to lyrics of popular songs proved that there was an audience for that. Suddenly, you had Beatles and Stones fans being exposed to poetry, politics and intellectual faire and people were awoken and began to understand what a seismic change that was. I hope people who buy the book get a grasp of why he was so important historically and why he's so special artistically. Just because somebody is important historically doesn't necessarily mean they make great music. I always get slacked off by people for saying that I don't care for the blues and they say, "The blues is a very important music, it's one of the foundations of rock": and I say, "Yes it is but I find it boring" but Bob Dylan is both artistically great and historically important."

COLUMNS

Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...6/19/254

"Reese Wynans, I came to know him when he joined Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble and then after Stevie Ray Vaughn was killed, he played with a lot of people but for the last few years he's primarily toured with Joe Bonamassa. He's an amazing keyboard player and a super guy. I didn't know him prior to working on this record but my friend Mark Prentice who produced it with me suggested we bring him in and it was a perfect call."

MORE NEWS

Jacob Tremont has made a name for himself in the indie underground, known for his cinematic songwriting and raw, poetic voice. With a style that blends '90s alt-rock, modern folk, and lo-fi elements, Tremont's sound is often likened to icons like Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, and Pavement. As a regular figure in New York and New Jersey's DIY music scenes, he's built a reputation for his emotionally resonant songs and captivating live performances.
