Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...5/15/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 05/15/2025

"Well," began Cory Marks with a laugh, "There has been a lot going on with the release of the acoustic track "Sorry For Nothing" and of course, the album just came out in December so, that thing is only a few months old; I'd gone to Nashville for eight days, then went to Toronto for two days of rehearsals before I went to Europe for three weeks. So, it has been hectic and busy and I'm out with Dorothy and that's how I ended up at The Stone Pony."

North Bay, Ontario, Canada native Marks is being presented as a "Country" artist but the question remains; is he really? You see, this gentleman from north of the border has influences that range as far and wide as his own great country itself. So, to pigeonhole a talent such as his just because he has that Nashville "Twang" in his tone is not only a tad misleading but perhaps an injustice to the man himself.

Before that aforementioned Stone Pony show in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Marks took some time to discuss and shed some light on his growing career, the music industry and his new release, "Sorry For Nothing."

"It's quite the story," he began once again with a laugh."I had a lot of options and a lot of love for a few things. Growing up in Canada there was hockey so, I played a lot of hockey and had some opportunities there too which ultimately led me to doing this. Before I was a singer-songwriter and a guitar player, I was a drummer and of course, my dad being from Toronto; I grew up on a lot of Rush, and a lot of classic rock like Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad and so many great ones like Bryan Adams and Ozzy but I also grew up on a lot of country music too like Merle Haggard, Vince Gill and Brad Paisley. So, that's kind of where the variety and mix of my sound comes in; in my teens, as a drummer, I did the high school band thing and after that I was in a metal band and that's where I got into the more progressive stuff like Dream Theater, Lamb of God, Metallica and Pantera. So, that's where that mix of music comes from; I also loved aviation. I always wanted to be a pilot, which I am now but not as a profession but privately. Over the years, from my early teens into my early twenties, there have been a whole bunch of crazy moments that have led me to where I am now. Long story short; I ended up going for my private pilot license and my school shut down and I had to figure out what I was going to do. I was 19 years old so I went back to playing hockey. I ended up getting scouted by a few schools, one of which was Ohio State University but I just didn't see myself going back to school because I was excited to be done school for a minute or two. Fast forward a few years of junior and I ended up going to RMC, Royal Military College of Canada where I was playing hockey for them and enrolled as a pilot in hopes of being a fighter pilot which was the big goal and that's when I started playing acoustic, singing songs and focusing a little more on the writing part and posting some stuff on YouTube and Facebook. My teammates got a hold of that and one night when we were out on the town at a place called The Brask in Kingston, Ontario where we were going to school and playing hockey, my buddy Smitty got me up on stage and needless to say, the rest was history; the hockey thing didn't work out. So, they had just gotten me up for four or five songs and I was scared to death because I was used to being behind a kit when I was on stage; you know? So, I'd go there every week on Tuesday, Wednesday or whatever it was and play a few songs and people started asking; "Do you have a CD? You playing anywhere else? Where can I get your music?" and stuff like that. The Military College situation didn't work out and so I went back home and my brother's girlfriend at the time was managing a bar and said, "Why don't you come play here every Wednesday for a few hundred bucks until you figure out what you want to do?" I started doing that and started playing at other bars on Fridays which led to Saturdays and I started putting a band together. Again, long story short, here I am, I've been playing fairs, festivals, touring and playing bars and clubs since 2011 and it has led me to where I am now. I went to Europe, I'm on my third or fourth U.S. tour and I've done Canada eight times now coast to coast. So, it has been a long, crazy roller coaster ride but here I am."

Funny thing about "Roller Coaster rides" is that yes, they have hills and valleys as well as tremendous heights followed by downward spirals but if you're Cory Marks; you create your own track.

"Sorry For Nothing" is the single and the title cut of the album and it's technically my second album here with Better Noise. My fans understand and know but some don't understand; in fact, when I was in Nashville, I had someone tell me to, "Pick a lane." I said, "Why would I pick a lane when I can pave my own?" Like I said, I grew up on country music but I also grew up on rock 'n' roll and both of those, I think at the time and now, I look back and the '80s, '90s and really even the '70s were the greatest era for me. I was born in '89 but I'm always an old soul so my favorites are Merle Haggard, Bryan Adams, Ozzy Osbourne and Pantera and Lamb of God offer up the heavier side of things and my music reflects that. I always like to create my albums like I would a live show. If you're coming to see me live, I'll take you for a ride and really, there is something for everybody on there whether you're a country fan a rock fan or even a metal fan; I know there will be a song or two or maybe the whole album front to back; I always get the, "I hate country, I've never been a country fan but I love your shit and I love your album." So, "Sorry For Nothing" is just being unapologetically myself and that's country, rock, metal and this album has all of that."

Being unapologetic and sticking to one's guns in an industry rife with wolves in sheep's clothing and labels who love an artist's sound enough to sign them or take an interest only to try and change them to "Fit" a certain sound or mold so they can sell records, streams or whatever the current climate calls for is all too commonplace so, kudos to Marks for making his own "Lane."

"It takes people to do that and many don't, they succumb to the fame and the major labels and that's probably why I don't have a major label deal," he said with confidence. "It's not to be condescending or arrogant but it's not like I'm telling them what to do with their label; who are they to tell me what to do with my music and art? I think there has to be more artists, whether it makes you or breaks you or not, they've got to stick up for themselves especially in today's world. In a world of acceptance and being true to who you are, I think it's up to artists to really put their foot down and do just that because I think most of all in any genre and you can hear it in country and rock, I'd say that at least 80 percent of it all sounds the same; it's stuffed in this industry box and that's why the very few who aren't household names but kind of stand out might be timeless as opposed to the next where out of 10 songs, seven of them you don't know if it's pop-rock, pop-country or the same artist because the songs are the same tempo, same storyline and the same songwriters and producers for the most part so it's very commercialized in a way."

Just the fact that he was on the road with Dorothy should tell the music world that he's more than just another Country music act. Marks has a sound that leans country due to his vocal style and lyrics but his guitar and the music he writes refuses to conform.

"We get 40 minutes which gives us enough time to do some damage, it's gonna be a lot of fun," he laughed as he talked about what those filing into The Stone Pony were about to see. "We'll probably do around 10 songs and since Dorothy is kind of more on the rock side but also kind of has that gypsy soul feel too, we'll probably lean more towards the heavier side of things. Especially as an opener, my goal is to always get the crowd going and get them amped up for the headliner. So, my show, people have explained it as explosive, as high energy and really in your face and as an air show and aviation  enthusiast, I really like to, just like my album which really doesn't stray too much from a live show except for obviously the live energy. Again, referencing an air show, there are the high powered fighter jets which always kick ass, which in my set are the heavier louder songs. Then you have some tributed beautiful moments where the slower planes like the World War ll planes or the acrobatic guys with the colors dancing in the sky; it's really kind of like an air show, like a roller coaster from high energy stuff to some cooler, softer moments but really, the show just brings everybody together and that's the most important part for me."

Marks is currently back home in Canada with a schedule that will keep him busy through September but he always has an eye south and promises to be back here in the U.S. again in the future.

COLUMNS

Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...6/19/254

"Reese Wynans, I came to know him when he joined Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble and then after Stevie Ray Vaughn was killed, he played with a lot of people but for the last few years he's primarily toured with Joe Bonamassa. He's an amazing keyboard player and a super guy. I didn't know him prior to working on this record but my friend Mark Prentice who produced it with me suggested we bring him in and it was a perfect call."

MORE NEWS

Jacob Tremont has made a name for himself in the indie underground, known for his cinematic songwriting and raw, poetic voice. With a style that blends '90s alt-rock, modern folk, and lo-fi elements, Tremont's sound is often likened to icons like Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, and Pavement. As a regular figure in New York and New Jersey's DIY music scenes, he's built a reputation for his emotionally resonant songs and captivating live performances.

It has since grown to a nearly month-long event featuring opera, musical theater, baroque and chamber music, and a constantly evolving selection of other genres, including dance, world music, orchestral pops, and choral concerts.
