Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...10/9/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 10/09/2025

"We're based out of New York City and as soon as I graduated college I took off and moved there and never looked back because I knew I really wanted to give this a shot."

Larissa Vale is the undisputed leader of Black Satellite, a four piece hard rockin' unit who just released their second full-length album on September 5, are currently on tour and have a scheduled stop at Asbury Park's House of Independents on October 17 along with Mushroomhead, Psychostick and Mind Incision.

When it comes to touring, some bands love it, others not so much but Vale thinks she has the right lineup to make being on the road a great experience.

"We've had some previous members back in the early days, there has been a lineup change so it's me now with my amazing touring musicians and they are my best friends on the planet and it's just so great to be able to spend time with people you really love; on the road especially when you have to live together. We've been through Hell and back with all of the touring we've done; it couldn't be any better"

"This is a nice little shorter run; it's 18 shows, nothing super crazy," she went on, "I think the longest we've ever done was like 13 weeks and this one is like three-and-a-half. So, yeah, it's super easy. I love being on the road, if I could be on the road forever I would. This is gonna be our thirteenth tour in four years so I think relentless is a good way to put it. People think you have to leave your life behind to go out on the road and for me that doesn't really apply. I have two cats at home that everybody looks after and I just go live out on the road. You can still have your routine and life, you just kind of adjust it for living on a bus. I can still cook eggs in the morning on the bus, you can get an air fryer and cook food, I can go to the gym; I just make it work, you know what I mean? So, I don't feel like I'm giving up my life or leaving my life behind or that it's on hold, it's just, this is my life now, I'm on the road."

Many correctly consider Black Satellite a metal band and they would be correct. So, how did Vale gravitate to this style of music?

"I've always been interested in music, it's the only dream I've ever had, I don't remember ever wanting to do anything else. I had an older brother who listened to a lot of heavy music and we shared a wall between our bedrooms and late at night I'd hear him blasting Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Deftones and so I just really got into it at a young age."

"Young age?" She is not that old now and yet, "Aftermath" is the band's second full-length release and Vale was more than eager to discuss how the record came to be, the timing of its release, what she feels separates the band's music from others and more.

"Aftermath" is our second full length album but we've dropped a lot of singles along the way because it was that weird period during COVID where we were like, OK, we don't know if it's a good idea to drop a whole record right now because we don't know what is going on; so we released singles during that time and two years after and now is the perfect time to drop this whole record."

"It really comes down to the artistry," she stated with confidence. "I feel it's really important to be vulnerable and authentic when writing music. There are visuals; just be yourself. Everyone has inspirations and it's impossible to be 100 percent original nowadays but as long as you're not trying to fit yourself into a specific box; I want it to sound like this where you're kind of forcing it. Obviously you can pay homage to artists you enjoy but not emulate them in a certain way. When I'm in the studio, I'm not thinking about this or that or anything specific. I'm just going in there and writing and singing how I feel, writing words about how I feel and I'm not thinking about all those external factors; is this gonna be a happy song or a more alternative song? You know, things like that. I feel like, if you just get into the flow and try not to focus on external factors, at the end of the day, the music speaks for itself and that's the best thing we can do as artists."

"Aftermath's" track listing is rife with titles that suggest the record may be on the "Dark" side but Vale is quick to explain otherwise.

"I do tend to write about my own personal experiences. Music is a form of catharsis so anytime I'm having a bad day, that's when I kind of gravitate towards writing music. I don't know, for some reason, that's just how my brain works. Whenever I feel like everything is great, I don't feel like I want to write a song (laughs). I'm not this dark person all of the time but that's what I really like to do when I'm writing music."

Like many other bands, they get by with help of their friends and in the Black Satellite's case, they had two of the best lending their talents.

"Kane Churko, mixed and mastered the singles on the record and then we had Ben Grosse for the rest of the record. I don't think we could've squeezed another song on there because there is a time limit when you're pressing vinyl for example and I made it to fit the time limit for each side."

The October 17 show at House of Independents will be the band's first time at the venue and Vale says to hold on tight because they have a "Responsibility" to their audiences.

"Our show is super energetic. We come out of the gate swinging, we don't let up, we go from song to song to song all the way to the end. We leave it all out there on the stage and I think it really translates with the audience as well. I like to say, it's not just another show for us, it's a performance that the audience may remember for the rest of their lives and that's an important responsibility and it doesn't matter if our bodies are sick, tired or broken, we put on the best show possible every single night."

With definitely no shortage of enthusiasm, Vale and the boys already have plans for 2026; secret plans.

"There is a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes, nothing I can announce right now but 2026 is gearing up to be another big year for Black Satellite so there's a lot to look forward to."
