(JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ) -- In honor of Juneteenth, the Ocean County Library Jackson Branch is pleased to host a performance of early African American jazz by the Florian Schantz Jazz Combo on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Showtime is 3:00pm.
The group will dip into its vast repertoire for popular music that spans 50 years from the late 19th century to the early Swing era of the 1930s and ‘40s.
Florian picked up a trumpet at age 6, formed his own band by age 9, began playing professionally by age 10 and amassed 300 gigs by age 15. With encouragement from mentors including Dr. Ted Schlosberg of the New Jersey Workshop for the Arts and acclaimed trumpeter “Cadillac Phil” Rinaldi, Florian mastered 12 brass and reed instruments, plus the theremin, conch shell and jug.
Since forming in 2012, the combo has played more than 850 concerts in libraries, museums, town events, retirement facilities, concert series and benefits. The band’s menu includes 15 themed programs of music dating from the 1700s to the rock era. Many performances preserved on YouTube can be found on the band’s website.
