Brookdale Alumni Johnny Cannizzaro To Play Stevie Van Zandt in Springsteen Movie

originally published: 03/29/2025

(LINCROFT, NJ) -- Brookdale Community College alumni Johnny Cannizzaro is stepping into the spotlight in a way few could have predicted. In Bruce Springsteen's latest cinematic venture, Cannizzaro stars as a young Stevie Van Zandt — a role that feels as personal as it is iconic.

For Cannizzaro, portraying Van Zandt is nothing short of a “full circle moment.” Reflecting on his early days as a Brookdale student, he recalled working backstage on productions led by Billy Van Zandt at the college’s Performing Arts Center. “I remember once seeing Stevie in the lobby after a performance, and though I never mustered the nerve to say hello, that brief encounter left a lasting impression,” he shared. This personal connection deepened when, upon booking the role, he reached out to Billy. The resulting introduction to Stevie himself was a gracious and unexpected affirmation of his lifelong passion for music and performance.

Stepping into the shoes of an icon comes with its own set of challenges. Cannizzaro admits that capturing the essence of a real person is never easy. “There’s always a bit of anxiety—wanting to honor the legacy while also infusing a bit of yourself so it doesn’t come off as mere impersonation,” he explained. Much of his performance involves playing the guitar—a task he had never tackled professionally. Yet, the musical foundation he built at Brookdale, including lessons from teachers like Keith Heimann in the Music Department, proved invaluable. With the help of a dedicated coach assigned by the production team, he quickly embraced the role’s technical demands.

Cannizzaro’s roots in New Jersey’s vibrant music scene further enriched his portrayal. “Growing up, I spent countless hours at venues like the Stone Pony,” Cannizzaro said. “The history and energy of Jersey rock are ingrained in me and knowing that Stevie Van Zandt played such a pivotal role in that story made every moment on set even more meaningful.”

His time at Brookdale provided him with the technical skills needed for the stage and the mentorship that set him on his career path. “Two words: John Bukovec,” he recalled, crediting the renowned director and mentor with igniting his passion for acting. Bukovec’s belief that “it’s all about the work” has remained a guiding principle throughout Cannizzaro’s journey—a journey that took him from the intimate theaters of Brookdale to the sprawling film sets of Los Angeles.

After moving to LA soon after graduation, Cannizzaro spent nearly a decade honing his craft in challenging conditions. “Those nine years, where I often felt like a failure, were necessary—they either break you or make you stronger,” he admitted. His breakthrough came with a role in Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys, marking his first major gig and paving the way for the high-profile opportunity to work with Springsteen.

When asked what advice he’d give to aspiring actors from his alma mater, Cannizzaro’s message was both candid and inspiring. “Follow your heart. Acting isn’t just a job; it’s a calling that makes you feel alive. Trust yourself, trust your work, and trust the universe. Sometimes, it just takes one person to see something in you,” he advised, emphasizing that even the harshest setbacks can forge a path to success.
