(TRENTON, NJ) -- Like many of you, the staff at New Jersey Stage woke to the news that a horrible shooting occurred early Sunday morning (June 17) during Art All Night in Trenton. According to news reports, 20 people were wounded, including 17 from gunshots. One person thought to be one of the shooters was killed. Another suspect was taken into custody by the police.
New Jersey Stage is saddened by the news that gun violence has not only taken place in our state, but within the realms of an art event. We always hoped we were safe at such events, but the reality is it was likely only a matter of time before gun violence struck the arts here. We have previously seen gun violence at concerts and with the Trenton shooting it appears the topic needs to be brought into the forefront.
Here are some links to the news: Trentonian, NY Times, NJ.com, Washington Post, USA Today. And here is a video report from the Washington Post.
This was the 12th year of Art All Night, a 24-hour art and entertainment event unique within the Garden State. It has provided an opportunity for four-year-old refrigerator artists, spirited novices and seasoned professionals to display one piece of art in a gallery like setting and for the public to enjoy that art in a dramatic renovated urban space. According to the Art All Night website, over 1,500 artists took part in 2017 and more than 30,000 people attended the event.
