Rider University Art Gallery presents Mel Leipzig: Octogenarian

(LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ) -- The Rider University Art Gallery will present an exhibit of works by Mel Leipzig, titled Mel Leipzig: Octogenarian Wednesday September 26 through Friday, October 26.  Leipzig, born in Brooklyn in 1935, resides in Trenton, NJ.

Leipzig taught painting and art history for 45 years at Mercer County Community College. He retired in 2013 at age 79 and is now Professor Emeritus. He has had over 40 one-man shows, including shows at museums, art centers and university galleries in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He had a Retrospective at the New Jersey State Museum in 1998. In 2009 he was the subject of two exhibitions at the New Jersey State Museum, one a selection of his paintings, completed in the first decade of the 21st century, “Mel Leipzig, Selected Paintings,” and the second “Mel Leipzig, The Artist as Curator,” an exhibition of figurative paintings from the collection of the museum.

Leipzig’s works are in the collections many museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Academy Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City. the New Jersey State Museum the Woodmere Art Museum and the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania.

 He has been described by art critics as “New Jersey's greatest living painter,” “A New Jersey legend” and “The Dean of New Jersey Portraiture.”

An opening reception is Wednesday, September 26 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and artist’s talk is Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00pm.

The Rider University Art Gallery is located in the Bart Luedeke Center on Rider University’s campus, 2038 Lawrenceville Road, in Lawrenceville, N.J. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:00am to 7:00pm and Sunday from noon to 4:00pm. To learn more, visit www.rider.edu/arts.
