ROCK ON! This Week's Sound Bites...10/3/19

By Danny Coleman

"A friend of my mom and dad's was playing "The Only Thing Is Love" and "Trilogy" on a stereo at their house and I wasn't much of a rocker at the time, I was probably about nine and I had been playing classical music like Bach but he was  playing"Trilogy" and it got to the synthesizer part and I wondered; what is that sound? Then one day my mom gave me a compilation of ELP tracks and that was the start," says musical virtuoso Rachel Flowers as she recounted how she became enamored with progressive rock music at an early age.

Makin Waves Record of the Week: "Chillville, YO" by Chill Smith

By Bob Makin

I’ve been saying for a while how much I want Chill Smith and Murdock to do an AP/JC mash-up because they both love superheroes and they have a similar breathy, staccato tongue-in-cheek style that also is similar at times to Murdock’s Jersey City pals, Cook Thugless. That funky flirtatious sound is best represented on the Makin Waves Song of the Week, “Pepto Bismol,” which features fellow Jersey Shore rapper Heather Hills on the second single from Chill’s debut full-length, “Chillville, YO.” As the Makin Waves Song of the Week, “Pepto Bismal,” can be heard 6:45 pm Friday and Monday on “Radio Jersey,” as well as four other times daily at ThePenguinRocks.com and Makin Waves’ Spotify and YouTube playlists.

Warren County Artist with Disability Choreographs Dance to Debbie Gibson's "Lost in Your Eyes"

By Sanford Josephson

Josh Handler has always loved music, and one of his favorite songs is Debbie Gibson's "Lost In Your Eyes", from her 1989 Atlantic album, Electric Youth. To Handler, the song has special meaning. Written in 1987 when Gibson was 17 years old, the song's lyrics describe a first, adolescent love. To Handler, though, the song, "shows a lot of caring, that it doesn't matter if you're different, you're still great."

Decades before Trenton’s first Art All Night, the Trenton Artists Workshop Association was created to promote local artists. On view now, works from several TAWA artists are on display at The Center for Contemporary Art in an exhibit entitled “Four Women from Trenton,” which was curated by Mel Leipzig - a name synonymous with Trenton’s art scene. The exhibit runs through October 26 in Bedminster.
