How far would you go for Love? For Art? A special, limited engagement of The Shape of Things at CDC Theatre in Cranford asks just those questions. In Neil LaBute’s fascinating and surprising play, nerdy Adam Sorenson meets Evelyn Ann Thompson, an attractive graduate art student, at the local museum where he works. His life soon begins to take an unexpected turn. At Evelyn's suggestion, he gets a new hairstyle, begins a regular exercise regimen, eats healthier foods, dresses more stylishly and begins to act in a more confident and dominant manner. These initial changes are well received by Adam's friend, Phillip and Phillip's fiancée, Jenny… at first. Jenny takes such a liking to Adam's new physique that she makes a move on Adam. From there the play takes a surprising turn. The Shape of Things focuses on the nature of stoicism, art, psychopathy, intimacy, explorations of love, and people's willingness to do anything for love. With the direction of Cynthia Ross, the relationships of the characters are brought to life by Matthew Blum as Adam, Judy Tounsi as Evelyn, Will Horner as Phil and Lita Zurka as Jenny.
