Category: music

Victoria Theater @ New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC)
1 Center Street, Newark, NJ  07102

Double Grammy nominee Cécile McLorin Salvant performs unique, theatrical interpretations of rare jazz and blues songs, Sullivan Fortner dazzles on piano, and the Emmet Cohen Trio opens with verve.

A winner of the Thelonious Monk competition, Cécile McLorin Salvant received a 2014 Grammy nod for her CD WomanChild in Best Jazz Vocal Album, a category she competed in two years later with For One to Love. Her popularity in the U.S. and Europe has led her to perform in clubs, concert halls and festivals with such artists as Jean-François Bonnel, Jacky Terrasson and Jon Batiste.

Salvant composes music and lyrics that she also sings in French and Spanish. She has appeared with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Spoleto and Detroit jazz festivals and many other prestigious venues.

Sullivan Fortner is a young pianist and composer from New Orleans who already has made a significant foray into the jazz world. He has performed and toured with Stefon Harris & Blackout, Christian Scott Quintet and the Roy Hargrove Quintet, among others.

Opening the performance is the jazz trio led by pianist Emmet Cohen, a finalist in both the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition and the 2015 American Pianists Association’s Fellowship.
