Joan and Robert Rechnitz are two of New Jersey’s most respected civic leaders. Since moving to Monmouth County more than 45 years ago, they have given generously in support of arts and culture, with a particular emphasis on arts education; environmental stewardship; health care and social services; and Jewish and humanitarian causes. Their philanthropic giving has been characterized by a commitment to improving people’s lives in meaningful ways and making the world a better place.
They established Two River Theater in 1994—a time when Monmouth County was the last major populated part of New Jersey without a professional regional theater. Today, Two River is at the forefront of the American theater, annually producing 8+ productions (including classics, world premieres, musicals, and theater for families) and 40+ events that reflect its diverse community of Red Bank.
Since its founding, Two River has premiered 16 original plays and musicals; commissioned original projects including Be More Chill by Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz (the theater’s first Broadway production) and Hurricane Diane by Playwright-in-Residence Madeleine George (now enjoying an extended Off-Broadway run); and developed numerous other plays and musicals. Each year, Two River serves thousands of students and community members through arts and humanities programs at the theater, in schools, and throughout its region. The theater’s three-story Center for New Work, Education and Design will open in August 2019. Two River Theater is under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst.
Two River Theater is located at 21 Bridge Avenue in Red Bank, New Jersey.
