(LEONIA, NJ) -- The Players Guild of Leonia presents Hair: The American Tribal Rock Musical from May 5 to May 21. This is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the musical, which features book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDemott. Hair is a story of the hippie counterculture of the 1960s where a group of young people are seen searching for truth, love, and peace in the tumultous Vietnam War era.
Hair originally made its debut at Joe Papp’s Public Theater on October 17, 1967 before moving to the Cheetah and ultimately to Broadway six months later. It was nominated for Best Musical in 1969, Winner of the 1969 Grammy for Best Score and Winner of Best Revival of a Musical in 2009. Hair features songs such as "Aquarius," "Let The Sunshine In," "Hair," and "Easy To Be Hard" - songs which defined a generation and brought attention to the plight of the young people of the generation.
Leonia's production is lead by Director Ellyn Essig and Music Director, Taylor Masamitsu.
“Directing Hair is a dream come true for me” says Director Ellyn Essig. “Not only is the Players Guild of Leonia's Historic Theater the perfect space for this very special show, I have been blessed with the most extraordinary cast that brings honesty and originality to a superb score. Hair is a spectacular show and in the times we live in, Hair is more relevant than ever.”
Hair is the fourth main stage production of the 97th season of The Players Guild of Leonia, one of the longest continuously active community theatre groups in the country and the oldest in the state of New Jersey soon to celebrate its incredible centennial year.
