originally published: 11/04/2016

The Association Returns to Newton Theatre On January 21(NEWTON, NJ) -- The classic band The Association is returning to The Newton Theatre on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 8:00pm.  One of the most popular and successful bands to have come out of the sixties, The Association have sold over eighty million records, CDs and DVDs, earning six gold and three platinum discs. Their Greatest Hits album on Warner Brothers continues to be one of the longest running, best-selling albums in the history of the company. Their number one hits Never My Love, Windy and Cherish continue to receive airplay years after release.

The Association was formed in 1965 after the breakup of an eleven man electric folk band called The Men, the first “folk rock” group. The six man The Association rehearsed for five months and then began performing in nightclubs like The Troubadour and The Ice House and other venues throughout Southern California, including coffee houses, folk clubs, colleges, proms and parties. Their fan base in Los Angeles grew into millions as Along Comes Mary and Cherish, both from their first album, topped the charts.

They were the first electric group to break through the anti-rock biases in many of the major venues across the country and were the first rock n’ roll band to perform at Hollywood’s Greek Theatre, The Coconut Grove, The Copacabana, Tanglewood Music Festival, Saratoga PAC and more. In 1967, The Association® made history being the first band anywhere to open a rock festival - the now historic, Monterey Pop Festival.

They had a handful of top ten hits in addition to the “big three” Never My Love, Windy and Cherish, all of which showcased the versatility, vocals and intricately woven instrumentation of their signature sound. They were nominated seven times between the 1966 and1967 Grammy awards. Also in 1967 they were nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Original Music and won the Foreign Press award for the film “Goodbye Colombus”.

The Association appeared on every major television variety show at the time, including Ed Sullivan, The Smothers Brothers, American Bandstand, Shindig, The Andy Williams Show and the list goes on and on.

The band began parting ways in 1972 due to burn out, and to pursue individual careers and other interests. After a reunion for a cable TV music special in 1979 and with much industry encouragement, they got together and went out on the road again.

In 2003 they were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They continue to tour, playing with symphony orchestras, at music festivals and a variety of venues. With a mix of original and newer members The Association is still going strong and sounding better than ever!

Tickets for The Association range from $34 to $49. Purchase tickets by visiting www.thenewtontheatre.com or contact the Box Office at 973-383-3700.

The historic Newton Theatre, located at 234 Spring Street in Newton, NJ, was founded in 1924.
