(GLASSBORO, NJ) -- Rowan Opera Company’s annual evening of scenes and selections from a variety of works explores the range of human emotions on March 31 and April 1, 2017 at 8:00pm in Pfleeger Concert Hall on the Glassboro campus.
Passion and Pathos, Tears and Laughter, presented under the direction of acclaimed artist and faculty member Jon Garrison, features seven scenes from five works. Included are significant sections from Gounod's Faust, about the temptations faced by a man who sells himself to the devil in order to regain his youth; and Puccini's Suor Angelica, about a young woman forced into a convent by her family after having a child out of wedlock and the pain she experiences years later when heartbreaking news reaches her.
The production also offers two scenes from Bizet's seductive yet tragic Carmen and two from Donizetti's hilarious L'Elisir d'Amore (“The Elixir of Love”), featuring a tenor in love with a woman and a baritone in love with himself. The evening closes with a rousing group number from Sigmund Romberg's The New Moon.
Garrison has enjoyed a distinguished international career singing with conductors, opera companies and symphony orchestras throughout the world. He made his operatic debut as Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi with New York’s Metropolitan Opera and subsequently has sung 21 roles in more than 200 performances with The Met. He also has appeared with more than 50 different opera companies around the world. As a concert soloist, he has appeared with more than 90 symphonies here and abroad.
