Newton Theatre Presents Screening Of "Almost Sunrise" to benefit Veterans

(NEWTON, NJ) --The Newton Theatre presents a special film screening of Almost Sunrise in support of Veterans on Sunday, January 22nd at 3:00pm. Almost Sunrise tells the inspiring story of two young men, Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson, who in an attempt to put their haunting Iraq combat experiences behind them, embark on an extraordinary journey – a 2,700 mile trek on foot across America. Proceeds from the screening will benefit Project Help, Stop Soldier Suicide and Disabled American Veterans of Morris County, NJ.

During this epic journey the two ex-soldiers  battle the moral injuries of war, and the temptation to escape through suicide. Step by step, Voss and Anderson confront the demons that haunt them, while discovering the power of community and spirituality to heal them.

While the film exposes some of the brutality of war, it doesn’t dwell there. It’s ultimately a story of hope. When Tom signs up for a special workshop for veterans, he must confront his deepest spiritual identity. He encounters Father Thomas Keating, a renowned Trappist monk who has counseled veterans for decades, who gently illuminates the need to turn inward to achieve true peace – and gives guidance that culminates in a remarkable inner transformation rarely depicted on screen.

Where the stereotypes of “the broken veteran” or “homecoming hero” leave off, the film continues onward, offering an unprecedented portrait of those who return from war; rich, complex, far more hopeful. Almost Sunrise allows us to connect with a universal human aspiration for happiness, and through Tom and Anthony’s genuine search for it, reminds viewers of our common soaring possibilities.

Tickets for Almost Sunrise are only $7. Purchase tickets by visiting www.thenewtontheatre.com or contact the Box Office at 973-383-3700.

The historic Newton Theatre, located at 234 Spring Street in Newton, NJ, was founded in 1924. Revitalized and fully renovated, Sussex County’s premier entertainment venue reopened in 2011 as a 605 seat capacity live performing arts center.
