Hudson County Community College Department of Cultural Affairs to Host Female Film Festival

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Department of Cultural Affairs is presenting a collection of indie films in collaboration with filmmaker Delaney Buffett. The festival will run from March 2 through April 28, with screenings in the Dineen Hull Gallery Atrium, which is located on the top floor at 71 Sip Avenue in Jersey City – just across the street from the Journal Square PATH Transit Center.  

All of the short films will be shown on each of the screening days:  Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, March 14 at 12 p.m.; Thursday, March 15 at 12 p.m.; Thursday, April 12 at 2 p.m.; Tuesday, April 17 at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, April 28 at 1:30 p.m.

Screenings are open to the general public, and there is no charge for admission.

The films include:

First Match, directed by Olivia Newman, revolves around a determined 14-year-old wrestler who prepares for her first co-ed match where there's much more at stake than winning. Newman is a writer/director, alum of the Sundance Directors and Screenwriters Labs, and recipient of the 2015 IFP/Durga Foundation Filmmaker Award, the Adrienne Shelly Foundation filmmaker grant and the Maryland Filmmakers fellowship. First Match was financed by Netflix and will be released in 2018.

Kid Warrior: The Xiuhtezcatl Martinez Story, follows Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, a teen climate activist, who has already taken on major oil companies and inspired young people in 25 countries to take action in the fight against climate change. Vanessa Black is a documentary filmmaker from California whose company, BLKFLM, works to create impact driven stories, and has been honored to work with Al Gore, the United Nations, UNICEF, and Appian Way.

New Deep South: Kayla, directed by Rosie Haber, Kayla is a series which explores the multifaceted queer culture emerging in the American South, and explores the evolution of identity as young Austin considers what transitioning to a woman would mean in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Haber won the Audience Award at LA Film Festival and New Orleans Film Festival, a Web Award and was nominated for a 2017 GLAAD Media Award for her digital series, New Deep South.

Run Mama Run, is a story about an elite track athlete, Sarah Brown, who will continue to train through pregnancy and postpartum with help of her trainer and husband, Darren Brown. Directed by Daniele Anastasion, a documentary and commercial director, Run Mama Run was nominated for a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Serialized Sports Documentary. 

The Spring, in August 2016, seven female filmmakers, all under the age of 25, traveled to Central Florida to film the women of Weeki Wachee Springs and their daily performance of the mermaid show. Delaney Buffett is a writer, producer, and director who is currently writing and producing the web series, City of Angles, which was an official selection at the 2017 New York Television Festival, NYC Web Fest, Hollyweb Festival, and Portland Comedy Film Festival. Delaney's directorial debut, The Spring, premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival and went on to win the award for Best Documentary at the 2017 Toronto International Short Film Festival.

The Benjamin J. Dineen III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery is located on the sixth floor at 71 Sip Avenue in Jersey City. Rotating exhibitions can be viewed Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Gallery is closed Sundays and holidays.The exhibits at the Gallery are open to the general public, and there is no charge for admission.
