"I thought of that name for the group because first, I always liked the candy and thought it was very special stuff; kind of like medicine that tasted good," says lead vocalist and guitarist Mimi Betinis of the '70's "Power Pop" group PEZBAND. "What really kind of fascinated me was the letter combination; P E Z. I thought it was kind of unusual and out of high school we had a little jam band and called it PEZ and then I thought; why don't we make it something that people will only associate with us instead of the candy? So I decided to call it PEZBAND so that the name just meant the group instead of the candy."

Full on Empty, featuring Dan Caputo of Negative Sky, pictured, will be one of 24 bands that play the inaugural Makin Waves Fest May 17 to 19 at the Brighton Bar, Long Branch, and May 20 at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park. Also featured this week are Lump ‘N’ Loaf Records, He Said She Said, Park Fest, Telegraph Hill Records, Jernee Mill, Cat London, Kathleen Elle, Mike Montrey Band, Greygoesblack, The View from Here, Asbury Park Music Foundation and Rose Kingsley. 



Makin Waves Record of the Week: "Dark Country" by Little Vicious

Little Vicious will release their “Dark Country” LP on May 17, which will coincide with a video shoot for the track “Soul Collector” at Whitechapel Projects in Long Branch. During the 12 months that she has been able to devote to her music full time, bad-ass shredder Marguerite King has been able to make Little Vicious one of the best bands in New Jersey and their forthcoming LP, “Dark Country,” proves it.

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School's Collaborative Exhibition Will Feature Art From Matheny's Arts Access Program

(NEWARK, NJ) -- When Geeta Acharya arrived at the Matheny Medical and Educational Center as Corporate Compliance Officer in June 2010, she was impressed by its Arts Access Program, which empowers individuals with disabilities to create art without boundaries. Acharya, a resident of Bridgewater, is also an artist and was amazed by the facilitation process, which employs professional artists who follow the instructions of artists who may not have control of their hands and, in some cases, are non-verbal, communicating 'yes' and 'no' by a blink of the eye or a nod of the head.

(LONG BRANCH, NJ) -- New Jersey Repertory Company (NJRep) will continue its 27th Season with the World Premiere of Two Hander by Julia Blauvelt, directed by NJ Rep Artistic Director SuzAnne Barabas. The play stars Ella Dershowitz and Jill Eikenberry and runs from April 18 through May 12, 2024.
