(BURLINGTON CITY) -- Bridge Players Theatre Company, the Burlington City-based community theatre group, presents the classic story Little Women, opening November 22 at continuing weekends through December 7. Little Women is the enduring classic about the March sisters’ journey from childhood to maturity during the American Civil War.
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s novel, audiences of all generations will enjoy acquainting (or re-acquainting) themselves with practical-but-romantic eldest sister Meg (Emily O’Connell, Burlington), high-spirited Jo (Allie Shaw, Haddonfield), shy, gentle Beth (Arielle Kline, Titusville), and beautiful youngest sister Amy (Mia Zambrano, Moorestown), as well as their beloved Marmee (Ashley Carragher, Marlton) and Father (Tim Kirk, Delran).
The play begins on a memorable Christmas when Marmee is called away to tend to her sick husband, and Jo sells her beautiful hair to help finance the trip. It ends just a year later, as the March family prepares again to celebrate Christmas, along with the return of Mr. March. In between, we live, love, laugh and cry with the March sisters as they go through life’s joy and pain.
Little Women continues Bridge Players’ season-long theme, “Celebrating Women,” in which the theater company presents entertainment that highlights the strength of women in numerous ways.
Director Maureen Broadbent of Oaklyn comments: “About 22 years ago, I was privileged to play Marmee in a local production of Little Women. That experience left me with a fondness for the play. When the opportunity was presented to me to direct this show, I jumped at the chance, and I brought along the director of that 1997 production (Patti Keefer of Gloucester), to be my assistant director. I hope our audiences will leave our production with the same fondness I developed all those years ago.”
Also included in the cast of Little Women are Alec Stark of Wrightstown as Laurie, grandson of the March’s neighbor Mr. Lawrence (Bob Rossi of Collingswood). Gavin Knox of Pemberton plays Professor Bhaer, with Cynthia Young of Perkasie, PA as Aunt March/Hannah, and Aaron Wachs of Marlton as John Brooke.
All performances will take place at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 36 East Broad Street, Burlington, NJ. Show dates and times: November 22, 23, 29, 30, and December 6-7 at 8 p.m., and November 24 and December 1 at 3 pm. The performance on Friday, December 6 will be sign interpreted.
