(TEANECK, NJ) -- Author and journalist Mark Engler discusses his new book This is an Uprising: How Nonviolent Revolt is Shaping the Twenty-first Century, written with Paul Engler, on Saturday, February 27 at 8:00pm. The event takes place at The Puffin Cultural Forum in Teaneck.
From movements around climate change to Occupy, Arab Spring, and #BlackLivesMatter, recent history has seen no shortage of uprisings. Mass media often depicts these movements as spontaneous acts of rebellion, but in This is an Uprising, Mark and Paul Engler investigates the movements’ behind-the-scenes strategies, mechanics, and effectiveness. A reexamination of the work of Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., and activist groups ACT UP and the Weathermen, help place contemporary unrest in a larger context of social movements. This is an Uprising is both a historical review of social transformation and a handbook for those interested in activism today.
This event is the first in a new Puffin Cultural Forum series of talks and presentations by authors from The Nation Institute. Each event features an author lecture followed by a Q&A session and book signing.
