Who would have thought that the Granddaddies of Jam would be celebrating 50 years of music in 2015. For many including ourselves we thought August 9, 1995 was the end of the road.
On that fateful day guitar god Jerry Garcia died. It was hard to imagine The Dead carrying on without Jerry who was pivotal to the band both musically and spiritually. Yet, the surviving members of the group continued to play together at one time calling themselves The Other Ones or performing with other musicians in different configurations most notably as Phil Lesh & Friends, Bob Weir & Ratdog and Furthur.
The Grateful Dead were a band that toured regularly year after year. In the tri-state area we could almost count on spring and fall dates. The Grateful Dead taped every live performance so that their vaults were filled with material that over the years has been released as "Dick’s and Dave’s Picks thus another format for their legacy to live on through.
The 50th anniversary celebrations will start on May 4, 2015 (7 p.m. local time) with the 5th annual Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies hosted by Fathom Events. The concert film will feature a previously unreleased show from the Alpine Valley (East Troy, Wisconsin) performed on July 19, 1989. The concert will showcas plenty of GD classics such as "Box of Rain", "Sugaree", "Terrapin Station" and much more.
Yet, the best is yet to come on July 4th weekend as the four original members (Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir) reunite at Chicago’s Soldier Field for three nights of music. Joining The Grateful Dead will be Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), Bruce Hornsby (piano) and Trey Anastasio (guitar). Trey is a compelling choice as it was his group Phish who brought expansive, experimental music to the next generation of jam band fans. Like The Dead, Phish has a devoted following.
