(NEWARK, NJ) -- New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents a one time only all star-tribute to saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker with jazz pianist Bill Charlap, alto saxophonists Phil Woods, Charles McPherson, and Jesse Davis Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 7:30 PM in the Victoria Theater. The Bill Charlap Trio, with Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums, joins in celebrating the fire, freedom, beauty and vitality of Parker’s gift to music.
Known for his interpretations of American popular song, Charlap has performed with leading artists of our time, including Tony Bennett and Wynton Marsalis. He has received two Grammy Award nominations, for Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein and most recently The Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard. Charlap also has recorded albums featuring the music of Hoagy Carmichael and George Gershwin.
