(TEANECK, NJ) -- New Jersey Peace Action and the Puffin Foundation will show the film "Nuclear Savage – The Islands of Secret Project 4.1" on Thursday, March 12th, 7:00pm at the Puffin Cultural Forum, 20 Puffin Way, (off Teaneck Road) Teaneck, New Jersey. The purpose of the event is to call attention to the dangers of nuclear weapons, to encourage people to support the total abolition of these weapons of mass destruction by all nations and to support moving the money used for these weapons to humanitarian, environmental, educational and social needs. The event is free and open to the public.
"Nuclear Savage" discusses how the United States tested 67 nuclear weapons above ground at Bikini and Enewetok atolls and addresses the health effects on the people who lived on the Marshall Islands from that time until today. The film was produced, written and directed by Adam Jones Horowitz. The Executive Producers were the Pacific Islanders in Communications and The Kindle Project.
The film contains graphic images showing the effects of nuclear radiation on human beings and is a powerful reminder of why it is important for the world to make more progress toward the total abolition of nuclear weapons. Last year, the Marshall Islands filed suit against all the nuclear weapons possessing countries for failure to take their responsibility under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) seriously enough.
Following the film, Robert Donaldson, resident of Morris County and an eye witness to the 1951 atomic bomb tests conducted in Nevada, will discuss what he experienced both when the tests were being conducted and in the years following those tests.
Madelyn Hoffman, Executive Director of New Jersey Peace Action, will give an update on the Peace and Planet mobilization for a nuclear-free, peaceful, just and sustainable world taking place from April 24th - 26th in New York City just prior to the NPT Review Conference held at the United Nations every 5 years. The 189 countries signed on to the NPT began this review of the world's progress toward nuclear disarmament beginning in 1970, when the Treaty was first ratified. The more than one hundred international organizations endorsing the Peace and Planet mobilization believe that much more progress needs to be made.
