Thomas J. Carto Appointed President & CEO of State Theatre

originally published: 01/21/2015
(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- Following a seven-month national search, State Theatre Board Chairman Douglas M. Garback, Sr. announced the appointment of Thomas J. Carto a 25-year veteran of arts administration and leadership, as the sixth President and Chief Executive Officer of the State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ. Carto will assume his duties on April 15, 2015.

"The State Theatre is fortunate to have found such an experienced, enthusiastic, and strategic-thinking individual with an undeniable passion for the performing arts," said Douglas M. Garback, Sr., chairman of the State Theatre Board of Trustees. "Tom's years of experience in arts administration will ensure and build upon the continued success of the State Theatre."

The seven-month national searched was led by Arts Consulting Group (ACG), after the passing of former President and CEO Mark. W. Jones in May 2014. A State Theatre Board search committee, steered by Vice Chairman Scott Fergang, supported ACG in the national search.

"We are very enthusiastic about the future," said Scott Fergang, State Theatre Vice Chairman and Chair of the Board search committee. "And I am certain that Tom will provide the direction and vision required to continue the momentum the State Theatre has experienced over the last couple of years."

As State Theatre President and CEO, Carto will set the artistic vision of the theater; create and direct strategic plans; oversee day-to-day operations (including management of a 35-member, full-time staff); continue to strengthen the financial position of the organization through fundraising, sales, investments, and ancillary revenue streams; and handle board development, along with the executive and nominating committees. He will work closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure that the State Theatre remains a vibrant institution for the benefit of the people of New Jersey.

"I am thrilled to join the State Theatre team as their next CEO," said Carto. "I am very impressed with the State's record of success as well as their highly respected brand in the community and the region. There is no doubt that the State Theatre is poised for continued growth and achievement by providing exciting performing arts events, engagement and education opportunities."

Since July 2012, Carto has served as Division Director and Associate Professor of Arts Administration at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Prior to his time at the University, Carto was President and CEO of the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, Wisconsin. A state-of-the-art $217 million arts complex in downtown Madison, the Overture includes the 2,250 Overture Hall; the 1,100 seat historic Capital Theater; a 350-seat Playhouse; a contemporary art museum; three black-box/multipurpose spaces; and four art galleries. The Overture Center is also home to nine resident companies.

Prior to the Overture Center, Carto was President and CEO for the Renaissance Performing Arts Association in Mansfield, Ohio, a merged corporation combining a regional orchestra organization and a historic theater and civic center. Prior to Renaissance, Carto was the Vice President of Development for Pacific Symphony Association in Orange County, California.

An Ohio native, Carto received a Doctor of Music as well as a Masters of Music from Indiana University; and a Bachelor of Music from Ohio Wesleyan University.
