First Annual Asbury Park Music in Film Festival To Be Held In April

originally published: 12/10/2014
(ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- When the Garden State Film Festival left Asbury Park for Atlantic City it hurt tourism and the arts community. Thanks to the help of the Asbury Park Press, the city will once again have a film festival to call its own. The first annual Asbury Park Music in Film Festival will be held the weekend of April 10-12, 2015. The three-day festival will fuse the rich musical heritage of Asbury Park with the successful elements of the former film festival, and will involve the many local businesses, historic venues, and unparalleled talent that makes Asbury Park such an iconic destination.

Tom Gilmour, Asbury Park's Director of Economic Development said, "After meeting with the Asbury Park Press, we knew wanted to create a festival that would showcase our city's unparalleled music history and also continue the tradition of providing one of the most significant opportunities for local and national filmmakers to present their work. So, together, we created the Asbury Park Music in Film Festival, and the response we have already gotten from not only the city but from across the United States has been unbelievable. This is going to be one amazing weekend."

"We all know that Asbury Park is an amazingly artistic city with talent that is virtually unmatched in the country, so we are very excited to have created a new film festival that brings together the music and film communities on both a local and national level and, at the same time, helps our City's kids discover the gift of music; can't ask for anything better than that," added Tom Donovan, President and Publisher of The Asbury Park Press.

The festival will focus on music influenced films and videos as well as a special category for local filmmakers. A new web site has been created to launch the Call for Entries out to filmmakers: www.apmff.com. The deadline for entries has been set for January 31, 2015, with a late deadline of February 5, 2015. The Asbury Park Musical Heritage Foundation has hired Matt Hockenjos as Executive Director of the Asbury Park Music in Film Festival. In addition to our Call for Entries for films we will be looking for a significant number of volunteers to help promote and operate the festival. The administrative offices for the festival will be set up in APMHF's exhibit/performance space, Where Music Lives, located at 708 Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park, New Jersey 07712. 732.775.8900.

The Asbury Park Musical Heritage Foundation is a 501(c)3 corporation founded in November of 2011 in response to the overwhelming success of the Smithsonian Institution's Main Street exhibit: "New Harmonies; Celebrating American Roots Music." The foundation was set up to preserve, exhibit and promote the City of Asbury Park's rich musical heritage – past, present and future – and to contribute to the City's revitalization by securing Asbury Park as a musical destination. The foundation in partnership with the Lakehouse Music Academy has created a Youth Initiative to raise funding to provide music opportunities for Asbury Park youth.
